Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Will XOM cut more new hires?

New hires were told we were safe. If you were just starting at the company would you stay? Where would you go?

I would stay but use the time to look for another job.

At the end of the day it’s just big business and this is “the game” that many have to play with O&G.

You can be upset but the industry is based on favoritism, degree of work, and what impact you have in your first year. It’s like “the elephant” analogy. No matter what you do most will only remember your first 6 months to a year. If you were wobbly, you are probably (or already have been) sacked. If not, you live to fight another day.

I personally found a few good leads day one of leaving XOM the jobs are out there don’t get discouraged. Just realize this is how it has worked for years. So next time just make a good friend, do your work, and be as successful as you can. You are the only one in your own heart if you did all you could (I AM NOT JUDGING YOU).

If you did your best keep your head up but this place in the rear view and be a success for the next person worthy of you working for them.

I was also a new hire told I was safe and let go for no good reason. I feel lied to; when I chose XOM over my other offers, a deciding factor was that they claim to care about their people. Obviously they’re a business and it’s a cyclical industry, which was of course always understandable, but I’m not seeing any focused care for their people today... glad I got out when I did, even under the worst of circumstances. If you’re a new hire, the world is your oyster! You can get out and do anything! Best of luck to you!!

I was a new hire as well and still can't believe it to this day. Imagine 7 days of notice and I was shown the door? It was brutal and what did management expect for a new hire like me? Conquer the world overnight? One thing is for sure - not unless you rub elbows with your manager, you're in great danger of losing your job.

I was a new hire (1 year experience) who got cut. I don't think anyone in oil and gas expects to survive every downturn, but it's still a shock nevertheless. I saved as best I could, but making ends meet in a recession is always tough, no matter where you are in your career.

That said, it was a wake up call. I'm free now to study whatever I want and go wherever I want. I've zoom called with many professors looking for graduate students, and the prospects for fall 2021 graduate school are looking bright. I'm ready to get out of oil and gas and back to near surface geophysics. All that's left is to find something to fill the time and pay the bills until next fall rolls around. It's tough, but every day it gets a little easier.

@1nfc+16Fmdstg you daft? That's why many consulting companies are laying off their new hires also. With exxonmobil, at least you get a chance to not be cut.

@1dvu+16Fmdstg That’s a lie. The work isn’t there right now.

@1dii+16Fmdstg It is their loss. They had to do this. They cannot afford you. You’ll do better than this dwindling company.

I got hired last year off of from university, I even interned with them. And I got chopped. I really cried over this for weeks. I am now back in graduate school. Before joining XOM, I did have other offers from other smaller companies. To say the least, XOM is the biggest mistake of my entire life so far. I don't recommend XOM to those looking for jobs.

Lol. Every company is laying off new hires. Many consulting agencies are getting rid of the newest ones due to lack of work. At least hear you have a chance to not be let go, unlike many workers across the country.

Nobody is safe, except the cushy ones on the board.

Last in, first out.
In a system where back scratching and horse trading trumps contributions, competition is brutal and new hires have less favors to offer to supervisors.
Plus cutting them brings less baggage as their network is smaller, minimal impact - like a tree in the forest falling when none is there to hear it.
