Ford to Cut 1,000 North America Salaried Jobs Amid Overhaul

(Bloomberg) – Ford Motor Co. is preparing to trim about 1,000 salaried jobs in North America, looking to its home market for savings as part of an $11 billion global restructuring begun two years ago as it projects an operating loss this year.

The job cuts are aimed at improving the automaker’s efficiency and are not related to rising costs from the coronavirus pandemic, said people familiar with the action on Monday who asked not to be identified revealing internal plans. An announcement could come as early as this week, the people said.

Ford is in the midst of a sweeping reorganization as it seeks to reverse declining fortunes and achieve what Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett calls financial “fitness.” The company expects to report a full-year operating loss for the first time in a decade.

Last year, Ford closed plants and eliminated thousands of jobs in Europe, where it has been losing money. In North America – the automaker’s most profitable region thanks to F-Series pickups – the cutbacks are smaller and are expected to come in the form of voluntary buyouts. They are in addition to 2,300 previously announced salaried job reductions in the U.S. during Hackett’s tenure.

Ford cut 7,000 salaried positions worldwide last year in the first round of the global overhaul. Those reductions were expected to save the company $600 million a year. The carmaker had a worldwide workforce of 190,000 people at the end of 2019.

A Ford spokesman declined to comment on the latest cuts.

The only issue is if you take the buyout, who is hiring in automotive?

Who knows how the take rate for voluntary separation will impact involuntary separations. We were told at the end of 2018 that the number of people who took the PRP plan had been greater than expected and involuntary separations wouldn't be needed. Then came SRD.

I am not sure that they will find 1000 to take 9 months of salary to resign. If they included 6-9 months of insurance, I bet more people would give it consideration. My gut feel is that if the voluntary package is this bad, next years' involuntary packages are going to be equally bad.

Also glad they continued to hire after SRD. If they keep eliminating senior employees and hiring recent college grads they’ll have a day care center. It’s great that they hire inexperienced people too but high performing teams really need a better balance of experience.

I'm so glad Ford hired all those high priced consultants to advise on SRD. They did such a good job of consulting that the company has to do another round of layoffs a year later.

Agreed. VIP capped at 1,000 seems tiny!

1000 must be how many takers they expect for voluntary.
Maybe they meant 10000 in total with involuntary early next year?

I can come up with 60 dead weights in my department alone. Somehow the dead weights will remain though.

Another year, another layoff announcement. People get on edge for about three months, then it comes and they get rid of old timers but say it's a distribution. Then the automotive companies complain they can't attract new talent. Well, not too many people are interested to work for a loser, people want to work for a winner.

Wake up people. The C suite execs and the family do not care one ounce about you. We are nothing but a heard of cattle to them. Expendable.

Well, voluntaries this year likely means SRD round two next year. Not a surprise, as I recall in 2019 saying that the SRD plan was multi year...and that was before covid.

The number of VIP capped at 1,000 - seems rather small. If aimed at GSR’s, would met maybe 200 million at most; not enough. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that this time the VIP willed aimed at manger layers L5 and up exclusively, which might mean near half a billon savings with the right mix. Much better result. Plus would stream line efficiency. Also makes sense as in my area I see the management work feverishly on all sorts of special projects gather data and stats, trying to justify their kingdoms....

Well, I have 20 plus years in bug not management, and wife lost her job in 2019 then her new business to covid in 2020.....so no voluntary for me. Will instead start getting skilled up and updating resume instead of taking on more work. Might just retire next year instead and go out on my terms instead of being booted; the thought of getting 9 months pay severance is intriguing, if they offered the same VIP package as they did in 2018, I just might think about it.....though someone in another posting said that was not part of the deal this year.

This is a fluid situation depending on the loss associated with covid 19. It is not a good situation. Sit tight and try to see positive aspects in our lives. This has been a sh– storm wee did not need🥴
