Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

No One Is Safe. Period

Cisco has a long history of cutting positions in Oct and Nov. Unbenonced to 90% of the employees not in mgmnt positions. Fed/public sector to private sector is far game and you could have a huge target on your back. Are you a grade 11 or above? Two juniors at 1/3 your salary can do what you do. If you are not tied to a specific contract you are an even bigger target. Its an annual hunt the bean counters prepare for with camp and cross bows. You could be someone that they always call at 3am to get on an 8am flight. A true firefighter for the Company. Always putting Cisco first and drinking that kool-ade by the gallons. Or you could fit into their demographic of "diversity." its hog wash. I'm sorry to tell you, it doesn't matter. Bean counters are looking at numbers. In the end, you are just a number. No offense, its just the reality of a company who once had deep culture and now has big share holders. So, take your pink slip and the benefits package they give you and nurse your wounds. Bing watch your fav show and eat ice cream. Wear your PJ's for 2 days straight. I promise you will feel better one day. The sting of betrayal will wear off, you will find another path and will never drink anyone's kool-ade again.

"You could be someone that they always call at 3am to get on an 8am flight."

I use to be this person at another company. Worst 5 months of my life working. I was on flights Monday mornings getting home late Friday nights. Weekends wasted recovering from long flights and hours only to do it again on Monday. I told my then boss I was burnt out, only working 40 hours per week the next month which included all travel times. I spent the rest of the time finding a new job. I got home that last Friday night I chose to work, told my wife I was quitting and had another job, and the manager called Sunday morning for a Monday trip. I told him on the phone we need to have lunch. We met, I handed my computer, badge, corporate card, all receipts, and information. I told him I was done. No lunch or anything. Just straight up told him. I told him I already cleaned my desk and office out on Saturday. It was the best 2 minutes of work in my life.

End of the day, everyone is replaceable. While I think some organizations are "more" protected than others, I think there will likely be some fat trimming throughout the company, hopefully it's non-performers, but like you stated, I do not think anyone is protected at this time.
