Thread regarding Ford layoffs

1,400 or 5%????

I just heard a news bit on WWJ radio that said Ford is eliminating 5% of its salary workforce, or 1,400 people. 5% would be a lot more than 1,400 people, and I am pretty sure I heard what she said correctly. Wondering where the 5% came from.

"Ford is an amazing company ..." And then a handful of sentences later you're hypothesizing on how your individual Ford issue maybe discriminatory. Doesn't sound too amazing to me- just sayin'

LOL the management team wouldn’t know a “critical” skill if it bit them in the behind.

Here is how the “critical“ skills discussion goes (been there thru multiple reduction actions as a LL6).
Management team gathers to discuss who they want to protect. They mark those as “critical” skills employees. None of the employees marked as “critical” skills were actually skilled, they were friends of management team.

Let me tell you how this backfires. When the rest of the team learns who was flagged as “critical” skills (and they always do) - the truly skilled members polish up their resume and promptly exit; the moderately skilled members ratchet back their work to emulate the “critical” skills members.

Eventually the preponderance of the team are all “critical” skills. Funnily enough thru group think, the whole team deludes themselves into thinking they are actually skilled. Then Ford goes on a hiring spree because all the “critical” skills members actually need assistance in actually getting any work done. Of course the management team never admit this.

This is the story of Ford.

Thankfully only a few more months until I pull the retirement ripcord. Fingers crossed for a package.

Ford is an amazing company with best in class products and extremely generous to it's employees. I am very fortunate to have developed a skill that the newcomers simply have no interest in and isn't taught in college. It comes over time with effort, pain, elbow grease & creativity. Otherwise stated as "critical skill". There will be some who qualify for VIP and simply won't get the offer. Imagine having over 25yrs , age over 55, ready to go, but not given the offer because you worked hard to develop yourself and did the right things. Isn't that discrimination as well?

Definitely the blatant age discrimination should offend everyone. Remember, you are only shiny and new for a short time, then the next graduating class of new hires come in. Soon, in 3 years time YOU are a worn out toy, and HR and management are telling the new hires how YOU are a part of the problem, and THEY are the future. Make no mistake, they have been running this con for decades. How do I know? They ran this con on me 20 years ago when they recruited me. Told me how all their current employees did not have the right skills and were useless. How we were the future. Yep big con.

"Ford is all about age discrimination now..."

This is spot on. I've seen it get progressively worse over many years. Used to be justified as "identifying retirement risk." Now age discrimination is so obvious that it ought to offend each and every person.

Anyone hired prior to June 1 2001 has Pension AND Healthcare.

Make no mistake about it kiddies this has more to do with healthcare costs than you think. Yes pension contribution is expensive however healthcare costs for aging employees is really expensive when you are self insured.

Stay young;)

People with pensions cost more, hence the packages to those of retirement age. New employees are cheaper! Anyone hired before 2004 has a pension.

1400 x $150K / year is 210M per year. Factor in the cost new agency people hired, the lawsuits, the warranty and recalls due to the loss in knowledge. The paralysis for the next 6 months, the confusion with the loss of experience and re - orgs.

Ford hasn't recovered from SRD.

How does this make any sense?

Considering they keep hiring, they'll have to keep cutting to try to keep their overall numbers down. Ford is all about age discrimination now folks. Plain, open, in your face.

Ford To Cut 1,400 Salaried Jobs In Coming Weeks

WWJ NEWS - SEPTEMBER 02, 2020 - 10:34 AM

  • Hundreds of job cuts are on the way at Ford Motor Co.

A letter sent to employees Wednesday morning says Ford is going to reduce its U.S. salaried workforce by about 1,400 workers through a "voluntary incentive program."

The automaker says the move is part of a multi-year cost-reduction program announced last year, when Ford said it aimed to cut a total of 7,000 jobs. The goal is to increase the company's global fitness and effectiveness, while re-prioritizing products and services. Ford will focus on eliminating areas of the business that no longer work, while accelerating investments in new technologies.

A Ford spokesman said the company is hopeful that it will meet its goals through the voluntary program. However, if the targets are not met, "involuntary separations may also be required."

The program will open next Tuesday, Sept. 8, and offers must be accepted within 45 days.

Kumar mentioned a target of 1,400 and ~ 30,000 salaried employees in the US. 1,400 / 30,000 = 4.7%
