Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How can people think they're safe?

A few of my coworkers are not worried AT ALL about the cuts because they think they are indispensable - mostly due to how long they've been at Exxon. It's like they are intentionally keeping their heads stuck in the sand. People who have been here the longest have been specifically targeted for layoffs and yet these guys refuse to believe that.

I don't know if I should feel sorry for them or be impressed with their ability to go through everything that's been happening without a worry in the world.

You, and they, should know by now that it's virtually impossible to predict who might be laid off. High performer/low performer, brownnoser/nonbrownnoser, it doesn't matter. It's a c-apshoot. But also remember this: it's much easier for the corporation to rationalize axing an employee who costs 1M per year vs. one who only costs 250K. It isn't always taken into account, but I definitely wouldn't want to be one of the larger financial burdens on the company when they're looking at downsizing.

Have you not learnt EM culture. Do not trust what you hear.. Keep your friends close and foes (coworkers) closer.. smile and display the winning behaviours.. but remember they are competing with you.. else you are the next NSI

even if they cut 20%, that still leaves 80% of the staff. Therefore the vast majority should not be worried. Regardless of the job situation, worrying does no good anyway, bad for your health. If you are concerned about losing your job, you’d be a fool not to be looking for another one.

It’s EM.. take words with a pinch of salt. You are in the same rank pool.. I would party with you all day and work hard on my PowerPoints at night, just to be above you.

Why do you think we have not been training or mentoring you, eh? It's called job security. Share credit, or contacts? Hah! How are we going to return as well paid consultants after retirement then? This is how we were treated, this is how we treat you. It's called culture #weareexxonmobil. And it's why the titanic is finally going down. Get out, if you still can.

Denial is in Exxon’s DNA

From climate change to admission of our place among competitors to now the acceptable of their chances in the lay-off roulette.

This is very common at the refinery I work at. There's a feeling/rumors that only an additional +5% headcount reductions will occur at EM refineries given that they already run so lean.. per our Solomon studies.

@OP+16P9U5Xw Or they are just playing mind games with you. Told my coworkers “let the career take care of itself” but I had been working on alternatives already.

So are you sure they are not worried? Or is that what they want you to know..
