Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

So Happy I got Booted Out of ExxonMobil

I worked in the Baytown Process Control group and used to always get excellent reviews from all my control room staff and engineers. All of a sudden during my annual review, my boss - who knows nothing about process control told me I was ranked low and had to go on the Performance Improvement Program. I decided to QUIT and landed another very nice job in 2 weeks. My stomach and digestion has improved. I fell so happy having left ExxonMobil. I worked at 4 other companies before joining ExxonMobil and can say ExxonMobil is the worst of the very worst to work for. I always felt hunted, hounded and felt like working around secret police. I am not a natural talented brown-noser, I do not play politically-correct, I am blunt, honest, technical person, just was not the place for me. The boot from ExxonMobil was the happiest thing for me. I felt insulted, embarrassed and humiliated at first when they kicked me in the but but now I feel hundred times happier. If you are in a similar situation, not to worry, remember after every hurricane there is always sunshine. ExxonMobil is the worst and because of bureaucracy, you waste a lot of time doing useless stuff that has little technically enriching value. Get out now even if you have not been kicked out yet. Do not take the PIP, just leave.

DPC only offered to those with 3 years or less of becoming retirement eligible 52-54.99999) Presumably because if they sue that they were fired so that the company would not have to pay their retirement, they have a high probability of winning. If you are 55 or over, company says, you have enough, take your pension/ lump sum and go home,

@3bgh - I'm not certain this is true, or at least it may be specific to certain organizations I'm well over 55 and was offered PIP (the standard 3-option letter). No-one mentioned anything called DPC.

@3bgh+16PMybJh - does the DPC apply only of you were 52 before the appraisal period ended? I turned 52 after March 2020 and got put on PIP.

@3nws if you are months away from 55 you'll make it. As shared in this site early on, for 52+ NSIs there is no PIP: there is something called the DPC that is PIP in that they assign you tasks and monitor you but has no pass/fail - they will only fire you for cause, e.g. not show up, fraud etc. There was a snapshot of a document somewhere. Search for DPC here for details.

If you are a few months from 55 and plan to leave or at least want to take a mental break, it might be time for one of two things: have a little medical procedure that gets your a couple of months off for recovery or look to see if you can take off fine FMLA for mental wellness:

After 28 years with ExxonMobil, my manager reminds me that I could be next. I work from home, sick or not. I’ve always enjoyed my work, worked hard and was always ranked very well. This new ranking system and those running the show leave me baffled. If my manager is going to let me go, just do it! I’ve lost my gusto and I’m sick of the hostile work environment. I know that HR is NOT on the employee’s side.... they never are. I stay because like most, I need health insurance and I need my pension. I’m months away from being 55 and I can’t wait to feel alive again!

your description of management is very sad but as sad as it sounds, it is quite accurate.

The section heads at CSR in Clinton, NJ without exception are the saddest, incompetent bunch. One We-P has attempted to create a fraudulent empire for himself and he has attempted to achieve this by using useless lab directors who will penalize anyone who dares to disagree. As Wee-P's puppet masters, they have promoted stupidest, technically most incompetent people whose only purpose is to look good in advertisements.

Truly sad and pathetic

I agree with the OP and his situation exactly describes my experience at Clinton. As much as previous managers tell you that they value your experience, knowledge and opinions .... they clearly don't. If you are honest and contradict what they want to do, your ranking will fall. If later, it is proved that you were correct in your advice and opinion, that's even worse and your ranking will fall further. The only people that I have seen do well are those who brown nose managers (in Department meetings and "Leaders' Forums" work best) and those who fudge the reports on their projects to make it seem that everything is on track and they're meeting all targets. Is it a surprise that nothing useful has come out of Clinton in the last 20-30 years?

The experience at Upstream RTD has been shocking. In one of the drilling related function, there are few supervisors who are astonishingly shameless s—ers to the upper management. There are also those who don't mind making up and fudging data to appease their management.

In order to stay sane and away from such people, new job opportunities are critical.

I ageee with the earlier post about feeling hunted and hounded by supervisor/manager. It is like the Hunger Games. Do your work with one eye open while constantly looking over the shoulder with the other eye. They make people feel vulnerable and insecure.

I got PIP’ed and took the severance package. Now, I am glad to get the heck out of there. At the time, I was upset, but now, I feel lucky to get out now, and not still be putting up with their c-ap & sick games.
Most people in my department, can’t sleep, they are beaten down, overwhelmed, sad, that they sit motionless, just feeling defeated. The result of the bully work environment affects their performance. The employees keep trying to work, and try to avoid the abusers, and try to avoid becoming the next target, and then it happens, suddenly you are not the great employee they once said you were, and they turn on you.
It’s Blitzen Mode- this isn’t an office it’s h*** with fluorescent lighting.

Good and real news - there are several jobs out there - process, operations, process control, projects. Pensacola needs a paper plant process control manager. Clearlake area needs process and project engineers at a Japanese owned polymer plant. I could go on. I filled resumes on all online sites - career builder, monster, indeed, and some others - I forgot their exact names and I had actually multiple job offers in just 2 weeks. Make sure your resume is modern, concise, 2 or 2 pages, and send to all job search sites. Apply direct to company websites. Only poorly run archaic oil companies like Big Oil like ExxonMobil, Chevron etc with incompetent id–ts like Rex T and Darren W caused the oil jobs to be jeopardized. But paper plants, electric power plants, specialty chemicals and a lot of other manufacturing are busy and need people. Post to all websites and direct to companies and then remember - like a hockey game - you can get a goal any minute, anytime. Put your resumes everywhere and it will happen. This is what I did and found a dream job in a short time after leaving ExxonMobil. Stay positive and you will be rewarded. I cannot tell you how happy I feel I do not have to show my badge at the security gate and constantly hear crazy deranged managers constantly reminding about corporate AmEx and how someone got axed for accidentally using the AmEx card and similar BS about crazy levels of morbidly insane safety talks and safety meetings to the point you could actually have an unsafe situation because of excessive worry that someone is watching you all the time. Houston had more traffic accidents due to red light cameras and I felt stressed in ExxonMobil and felt more vulnerable to safety incidents. The world is big and bright, leave the ExxonMobil sewer behind.

In a hockey game sometimes a team gets a goal in the first 10 seconds! Bit of luck!! In job hunt, anything can happen anytime! It's possible to sometimes get a new job in 2 weeks, or could be 2 months or longer, who knows?! But always treat job hunt like a ice hockey game - you can get a goal or a job anytime. You may get 0 goals in 2 periods and then get 3 in the final period and win!

Yes, they are a bunch of arrogant self-entitled SLS's, who are young, Godless, and cutthroat. They want to impress the management by setting many good and hardworking employees for failure, so they can be PIP'ed.

I fully understand the issues you had. I have since retired from XOM after 30+ years. It is VASTLY different today from the company I joined so long ago. The management today have no clue about what happens with operations, they have never experienced it and what transpires today are just a bunch of arrogant self entitled kids (yes kids, at least that's how they conduct themselves.

You won't look back as I didn't.

I have never heard anyone say they regret retiring from ExxonMobil early. Also, once you get out of that environment then you realize how bad the culture is. You can make a great living working for ExxonMobil but you will pay for it in constant frustration. And the sad part about it is the management is so prideful and arrogant they don’t care, they’d rather you just leave. I’m certainly thankful for all the benefits of working there but the culture and environment is just terrible.

Happy for you! Being an "NSI" at ExxonMobil, which promotes a certain type of individual or behavioral approach does not mean you are not an "Outstanding" performer at another company. I agree that ExxonMobil clearly promotes a "groupthink" mentality where validating your manager's opinion is rewarding, which is super demotivating. I wish you the best of luck in your new career.
