Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Advice

I chose the PIP option. I preferred it becasue it gave me options. If I am successful, I can stay. (That pension is pretty nice) I do not have to sign the "I will not sue you" document. And sure I do not get outplacement help, but I can still look for other work.

At the beginning of August, I was sincere in wanting to stay. However, a lot has changed in the past six weeks. Oil & Gas is struggling - fracking has increased supply and COVID has reduced demand. Consumer preference is for renewable energy. I don't believe O&G will ever recover. Exxon has done worse than other oil majors. Look at natural gas prices for the past 10 years - that XTO purchase was a huge boondoggle. Exxon wants to be an energy company, but refuses to invest in renewable energy. I mean freaking algae! WTF We deserved to get delisted from the Dow for poor management decisions. Look at the culture and how they treat us employees. The "most valueable asset" doesn't get the respect of a severance package, but instead a kick out the door. They cut the 401K match, Australia is having a real layoff and we are still not cutting enough costs. So for sure there is more coming. Probably global layoffs where local country laws don't prevent it, maybe pension cuts. Anything to protect the sacrosanct dividend.

The past six weeks have changed my perspective. My primary goal now is to find a new job. Even if I am successful at the PIP, I still plan to leave. My advice is most of you should do the same. Update your resumes, get your linkedin colleagues to reference you and start applying.

I agree. The corporate culture is the worst. At least the devil admits his evil intentions. ExxonMobil stabs employees in the front and back for asking intelligent questions or challenging inefficiencies. I am on the PIP and interviewing in other industries.

You guys must be stupid. If management was bad now, then it was bad a year ago. You should have left a year ago. You are Stupid, for sticking around and now you get to look for a job in a depressed oil market and COVID crisis.

I would stick around while looking for another job as you indicated. If you pass the PIP there may be other opportunities like voluntary separation coming similar to the offers in Australia

How in the last 6 weeks have you realized shales have increased oil supply? Have you been living under a rock for the last decade?

I want to see DW PIP'd, but he would probably just use his connections for a Directorship at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, or one of the companies that provide external board members to EM,

I was with the company for 30+ years, never anywhere close to the PIP/NSI group in rankings and always had great feedback from knowledgeable others (or at least since they started that process). EM has changed completely in that time. Yes, managers were always concerned with ensuring next year's budget was maintained (hopefully increased) and that their little empires were safe - but critical thinking was appreciated back then. Now. if you question your managers, you are labeled as a troublemaker and your ranking plummets. I think that's what happened to me, with a really arrogant supervisor who seemed clueless and did not appreciate my comments/opinion/advice. These days, your only guarantee of success is to say "yes" to everything and s_ck up to your boss. They want sheep, not thinkers. They'd rather promote someone who spends all day in pointless meetings, than someone who just gets on with their job and does it darned well. They reward mediocrity and stupidity (e.g. "near incident" reports and "actively caring"), while the people actually working to improve the company's performance look on in disbelief and disgust. Maybe EM should get out of the O&G business and into lamb and wool, because all they want are sheep.

Smart, thinking - leave as soon as possible. The main reason I say is the culture and the managers are the worst of the very worst. I left and my health has improved. My digestion has improved. I hate the ExxonMobil culture and the managers down to my bone. The rotten sewer scumbags, sorry I do not have knowledge of worse vocabulary!
