I've seen 4 or 5 HR investigations at my site for varying degrees of harassment (mostly threats of violence). They send a team to interview workgroups to find out what the employees know, wag their finger at the offending party, and local management promotes them. Merit promotions are overshadowed by Nepotism and Cronyism. I'm hoping for a package to get me out of here early.

And why would they be? They are hired to protect the interests of the corporation, just like you. Why would anyone think the company would hire someone to protect anything else?

Wake up, HR is not here to protect employee, they are working for this unethical company to reduce headcount before their role being impacted.
One HR supervisor leaked this by accident, she is in dilemma and looking out as she cannot cope with her HR manager, they are not upholding HR principles.

But Eyelashes came to our geo field trip and told us she was our bestie.
We even drank and enjoyed the boondoggle because she said she was one of us.

@hyc+16XWmAHf - I'd be surprised if anyone with more than a couple of years of service thought that HR exists for the benefit of the employee. It's obvious that the function of the HR department is to enforce company policy (pertaining to employees) and protect the company's interest. It will be the same at any large company.

HR’s sole interest is to support management to reach full completion of this headcount reduction exercise. There is absolutely no “employee advocacy” element to their mission. Moreover, they recently reorganized and all employee complaints and concerns in the U.S. are now fielded by a “help desk” type of group that will likely move to Argentina next year. HR is actively looking for cost “wins” (such as the announced suspension of the Savings Plan match) and pension plan cuts are probably next. Early 2021 should bring much larger headcount reductions and major changes to the U.S. pension plan. The U.S. is “high cost” and has few legal protections for employees, so it is ripe for the picking.

Since HR is for the company and there is no one on the employee’ side, maybe it’s time to unionize!

There is no one to advocate for the employees, least of all HR. Most people wouldn’t even know who to contact.

NO company's HR is on the employee side. They are there to protect the company, not the employee. And you should watch what you share with HR. It can back fire on you or your team.
I don't work for this company, but a member of my team went to HR and now a team of 50 people are RIF (Reduction in Force - laid off). So if you can solve difference amongst yourselves, that would be the best. Also, remember, you've been hired by the company to work, so keep it professional. Mind your own business and get the work done. That's it. Don't let the minor little things bother you. Believe me, when you are RIF'd, you'll say what a waste of time thinking about all those minor things when I could have spent the time updating my resume, gaining skills, and applying for jobs (even just to get the interview experience). It's very competitive finding a job right now, no matter what field you are in. There are 30 million people out of a job, so don't think you're going to find it a week or two after you are laid-off.

Did anyone actually believe they were for the employee?

Was that actually a question? I know people who were pipped in a way that easily bleeds into wrongful termination, and HR never stood up for them. HR is there to cover the company’s behind.
