Exxonmobil has been floating VPs at VP salaries for years after they demoted them to managers because of incompetence.
Just do a career connect search on your least favorite manager. They were probably a VP at some point. AND. Still have a job.
There is a former pipeline VP that was working in licensing, he may still be there. If you look at his SP profile be decided to change jobs right around the time of the Yellowstone pipeline spill. Wasn’t his fault since that pipeline was installed shallow way before him but he didn’t get to stay as VP.
Regarding project organization overhead: how is this even a surprise? They took an organization with downstream salary curve and put it in a structure with management in upstream salary curve. And this was discussed exactly where?
Outside of EM no one cares about VPs or other leeches seriously. They can only suppress a timid and at times extra greedy EM employee population.
Projects overhead went through the roof once EMRE was absorbed by Upstream. I was aghast at the layers of management and number of VPs. Worst mistake is to make project supervisor responsible for ranking and career. Guarantees everyone will agree with the boss, no one will tell them when they are wrong. My wife was always top third, she told her SPM he was making a bad decision and he got triggered. After that he avoided her and arranged for her to get reassigned. Her friends that are still working on the project are now too afraid to speak up if he make a mistake. Good thing the project got paused.
TJ is now a VP of the corporation. The EMRE president typically isn't. That was clearly a promotion.
Check F&L org chart there are nested levels of VPs intermixed with managers . Too many IMHO
Former EMRE president, now corporate planning VP. Just an example of lower sounding title with higher importance.
They have also reduced the number of VP roles over time. I can think of jobs that had a VP title 10 years ago where the same exact job is now director or manager. Tough to draw conclusions from this.

Completely wrong. This is not how it works. One can be a manager somewhere and be really higher than VP elsewhere. Wrong example.
