Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Relocation crock.

I’ll have to admit, I’m a little disgusted with their relocation policy. If you were relocated to Midland with Chevron and they leave you standing you are required to relocate back on your own dime if you worked there over 2 years.

I don’t know why it would make a difference if you worked there 1.5 years or 2.5 years. It seems like if they would relocate you back for one they should do it for the other.

I hate how they are doing this.

I was once offered a job to move to Midland, TX by my supervisor and manager. I politely told them no, then went outside the building to scream “f–k No” out loud. Felt good to get that out.

Yea... all you Midlanders were really forced to move there, get all the relocation benefits, and it was so rough that chevron gave you an uplift to live in Midland. Boo f-ing Hoo. When they asked you to move, you could've said no.

I was relocated 2.5 years ago and I was protected by Chevron from a loss of home value when I moved to this hell hole. (It’s part of the agreement in the relocation package). It was always the plan to move back after 2-3 years. The promise contractual in the relocation package.

What they don’t tell you is it only applies if you relocate back with Chevron. If they decide to lay you off, your on your own. Well, guess what has happened to home values in Midland in that 2.5 years time? They certainly haven’t gone up and my position is being eliminated. So either I get a job with with CVX and move back or get left standing and move back at a loss on my own.

They have to draw a line somewhere is a c-ap answer. They have full control over this.

I've always thought if they moved you for a job, they should bring you back to your home base, just like they would for an international assignment. I worked for a different company and moved back after one year and quit because the CEO was a psycho. They sued me for reimbursement.

OP As much as I don't like a lot of what CVX is doing, they have to draw a line in the sand. Two years seems pretty good. If you moved 10 years ago, would you expect them to move you back?

Yes, this 2 year rule is a bonus compared to other employers who offer nothing. If you are a US citizen working in the US, moving around for employment, and paying your own way when not employed, is just a fact of life. Having this 2 year thing is nice. I don't know why Chevron did not out the benefit on a sliding scale over time across the 2 year boundary. I suppose because more burdensome to administer, but then that raises the question of why they have the benefit it all.

Don't they do this for retirees also? Relocate then to wherever they want in the US. That is dumb also. I expect that this is the uppers just creaming more for themselves.

Agree. I specifically didn’t take jobs in midland or Bakersfield in prior years for this reason. This company is on a layoff train that never quits. Don’t want to get screwed downing a house that is worth half as much and laid of. I’d rather get laid off in Houston.

You are correct re: Alaska. The don’t want any unemployed lower 48’ers mooching off them or cutting into their annual “royalty” payment. LOL

They do it in foreign countries because they are sponsoring your visa and are often legally bound to help you leave when your job is done. Most companies don’t move severed domestic employees at all, from what I hear, so the fact that Chevron does in some cases is bonus.

No, but if I am relocating myself and my family for their benefit and they decide to leave me standing I think they should send me back. Who wants to live in an area they didn’t want to go to in the first place but did so for loyalty sakes.

This is actually a requirement they agree to with many countries they do work in. Unfortunately, Texas isn’t one of them.

Agreed, it certainly doesn’t feel ethical or like a chevron way behavior.
