Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

It’s doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things. I believed in a thing that didn’t exist.

I spent most of my 25 year career as a supervisor/manager cheerleading the merits of XOM as a company that cared for life long employees. You do your part and they will do their part. Then I found myself under the management of someone outside of my discipline that didn’t feel the same way as I did about XOM. The principles we held as a company. They were told to pick someone that worked for them that needed to be in the 8%. Not 20%, not even, 10%. But 8%. From the top 1/3 of your career to the bottom and being told to leave. And this person didn’t know me or my career. They didn’t really care. They were just told to pick someone. There was no fighting for me. And that is the end of an otherwise great career.

24 years. 61 years old. PIPed. Only regret, should have shut the computer down when notified of PIP, would have been another three weeks off.

It’s pretty darn clear what’s happening across the Company. For example, grouping Engineers and Geos at a fast rate. Soon the group will dissolve and you’ll be left without a job. Many of these overpaid, rude mo–ns deserve what’s coming.

Bully boss is a good term to describe mine. A horrible manager with no real skill set, he is thrilled to have a PIP to administer, he finally has something to do

@fvz+16ZJ9H7i Really snarky reply. Person opened up and you have to say welcome to the real world and millions of others feel this way. You are either an EM manager still employed that cut people or a troll. Go away.

Sounds like me in the OP, only 23 years for me... Sad and sour taste at the end of this job. Good memories and great experience. I rode until the wheels fell off. I wonder if they will get put back on.

Welcome to a world with layoffs to balance company needs. Some of the time it just isn't fair. You think the millions unemployed across the world feel the same way as you?

This is frightening. The idea that your current assignment OR your current manager/supervisor is not a good fit for you would possibly move you to NSI and you are PIP’ed or forced to retire doesn’t sound like a good idea. At the very least, you think they would notify ALL supervisors/managers about this and see if moving you to another role would make better sense. Now that I think about it, is it possible if your are in this situation to reach out to your supervisor/manager and your network and see if you can get yourself moved to a role that is a better fit. This is one reason I don’t like working for people I don’t know.

@OP - I wasn’t a supervisor, but I had a very poor relationship with my last one. Based on my knowledge of my work over the last year and the overwhelmingly positive feedback I received from KO’s, there’s no way that I should have been NSI’d. I am certain that it’s simply a case of him wanting to get rid of me, but with the secretive nature of the ranking system, I saw no way of successfully arguing against it.

Good post. I've seen exactly the same thing happen and it's sad.

Some were more than happy to pip. Narcissistic to the core a feeling of power and being above what you are. We have encouraged this environment and molded bullies. A recent wave of promotions of employees that do not know how to do their core jobs. One has to believe their current jobs are temporary and a lot will be let go soon. If the intelligence, knowledge or experience is not there, is it not human nature to become defensive when your challenged or afraid of exposure? This has resulted in an excess of bullies in xom management and regular employees who want to become managers. This should be investigated from top to bottom.

Same here. I hope everyone involved is exposed. At least Singapore is working on it.

That’s a great question! If your previous work history has no bearing and only the last years results, how is DW still even working here?!!

That is a coward. Why wouldn’t they even look at your work history?
