Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

PIPed over 40...Take the package

The majority of those who were PIPed were meeting their business objectives so managers force you to believe you are an issue. If you were smart enough to question your ranking, you were treated like a criminal up for parole. The ploy is to force you to admit “you are the issue” when you are actually being manipulated in a forced layoff. I have seen such great talent get Needs Improvement or NSI for being “different” and when I say different it’s not negative...just means you stand out and Exxon doesn’t understand creativity or change. Many people who are PIPed/forced in layoffs are very effective, good for the company, and have great ideas but the arrogant culture is choking out the talent to keep the ant culture were we “follow in line” as the company is failing. The experienced hires gave way too much “truth” about our inefficient practices for the management team to swallow. The new hires are way to opinionated for our good-old boy culture. The minorities coming in are way too eccentric to fit in at Exxon’s white culture. Exxon is no longer a great company or even a good company...From the Mobil side Exxon has changed and not for the better. It’s all about popularity contests and not about quality, potential, or your work efforts. Take the package. If you are PIPed or classified as NSI, you will not make it through the PIP. You will be forced to fail just like you were falsely classified in the bottom 8%.

Downvoted comments seem to portray the truth. Lol the number of disgruntled exxon employees.

The problem with resigning is that you lose the ability to claim unemployment and being able sue the company if there are reasons to do so. This is their way of removing any liability from you. If you do the pip and they still end up laying you off, can you file for unemployment benefits?

@gql: “performer” as in actor, on a play or charade. That’s the only way your comment makes sense.

The value of a professional isn’t dictated by the ranking system of a mediocre company in decline, nor by the corrupt and cowardly managers and supervisors, with their bias and cronyism.

If you think they love you because you play their game, you’re the biggest loser. I hope you frame your ranking, and it pats you in the back every time you contemplate tour empty life.

People seem to believe their self worth is more than what others see. No one is going to acknowledge that they themselves are less of a performer than others.

With comments like "meeting business objectives" and "expert" does not mean you are a high performer compared to others.

I signed my “resignation” last week. I fit in the 3 categories outlined above: high technical quality (company expert), truth teller, minority. I wasted enough of my time and breath at Exxon. No way I was going through the indignities of an inexistent PIP.

I tried change from within as I&D ambassador and spoke up when I felt I had to. I believed them when they said they wanted diversity of thought, courage of conviction, and have honest “conversations.”
They don’t.

Making managers uncomfortable and accountable doesn’t go well. Demanding clarity or even asking WHY is a problem. “Brutal truths” only come from hired consultants and specially appointed commissions. Command and control rules the day, and they are sending a message. They want cult followers, koolaid drinkers, true believers, and cheerleaders while Darren et al. asks them to go full speed over the cliff. Good luck with that.

I know I’m valuable and the market is already noticing my suitability and potential. While it’s no just severance for my time, I take these 3 paychecks as an opportunity to find something better. We are in the life boats of a sinking ship. The next ones won’t be so lucky, unless they are executives with golden parachutes.

Believe what you want. Whatever helps you sleep at night. You know the real reason for where you stand.
