Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Does ‘courage of conviction’ get you PIPed?

Anyone PIPed for challenging management or being outspoken? Two people I know personally who have been PIPed are vocal in their support of sustainability and tackling climate change. Is this a trend?

Love the buzz words “too much courage of conviction” and I was punished. Waaaaaa. You could have “courage of conviction” to start at 10AM and leave a noon. Or your excuse for being a d_k. Not listening and cannot collaborate.... if you’re courage of conviction was to generate more earnings, you’d have been outstanding. Nice try.

Yes Courage of Conviction might get you PIPed. Very likely so if your courage is used to challenge or stand up against your supervisor or a manager's opinion. As I watch the growing list of friends departed, it clearly isn't technical ability or work ethic that k–led them. It is how well they are liked by their supervisor and manager. It seems a certain number have to be voted off the island, and the supervisors and managers have to decide who they are going to fight for. So I suspect that most people who get PIPed it is for interpersonal issues, and the primarily interpersonal issue is with your boss.

Courage of conviction, that is something no one in the company's management possesses. The whole company is built on fear and punishment. All the talk about innovation and being bold. It is just the work of some top management person who wants to gain visibility. The program is deployed with zero risk to the "management personnel". And if anyone dares take up the challenge to demonstrate courage of conviction, ingenuity or bold risk taking, behold, the executioner is waiting with his guillotine.

I think company at the board level and at the investor level wants courage of conviction, technology and empowerment to be part of the company culture. But when it comes to the management from team leads/supervisors to all the way to the top, you may be dealing with illness with symptoms of arrogance, lack of creativity, missing spine, and slime.

You deserved to be PIP-Ed when you say a statement like courage of conviction. Gosh.. it’s not about being the “smartest” in the room but all about how people perceived you to be. Do you think your contributions really matter? Just say the right thing, do work that will help you stand out. And you will be identified as a high potential like Darren Woods.

Lol at Being outspoken about sustainability and tackling climate climate change. That does not improve base business nor does it align with company strategy. They deserve to be PIP'D

I was not pip-ed for it but was told specifically I was held back a rank bucket for having “too much” courage of conviction

Your boss is a clod if he thinks COVID is a hoax ... but what on earth were you doing writing him an email to try and correct him?!? That’s one of those things where you have to fight the temptation to do no matter how well worded or deserving it is.

Yes, management just wants you to shut up and do what they tell you to do. You can't use your brain.

Happened to me too. Was all accolades for showing courage of conviction until they decided to move me from the top of the middle third in the old ranking system to NSI in the new system.

I was pretty vocal about shaking things up. I pushed for environmentalism too. And most recently - my manager believed COVID was a political hoax. I took 2 hours to write him an email using non-partisan data to show why it probably wasn't.

I do wonder if that influenced things...

I absolutely believe this to be true. ExxonMobil is dropping in integrity, financial strength, and they are more expensive to execute a project than other Majors but when and if you question, challenge, or practice courage of conviction, you automatically get ranked in the bottom 8%. ExxonMobil does not want to change their culture or to be # one Major nor do they want to actually improve business efficiency. They have all those groups for diversity and inclusion but they do not actually care about women, new hires, experienced hires, super talented, or African American employees. They want you to follow an outdated power-hungry culture and they shame their employees for having great ideas. It’s a sinking Titanic ship. Mostly all the people who received a PIP or forced lay off never received feedback or a warning that their performance was inadequate. So before you apply to work here, just know it happened to almost everyone new or experienced who suggested great improvements.

I lost the most ranking points ever when I thought I was demonstrating courage of conviction and thought it was the management’s expectation. With less cynicism, it is just duplicity in the corporate world.
