It’s got to be an embarrassing job to try and sell a career at Union Pacific to a young person right now.

That’s what I’m saying. I wasn’t kidding. I was being very conservative. You may get a citation jet instead of a yacht as a bonus which each year getting four more seats.

I can almost guarantee you there that are more jobs jobs jobs to be had at companies that aren’t named Union Pacific and you’re more likely to have a job job job after six months if you start somewhere else.

Yes because the job market is hoppin right now. Jobs, jobs, jobs everywhere you look. And great paying jobs with better retirement plans and a 10’ bigger yacht every year as a bonus.

People would only jump for a job at UP if they didn’t know the cons especially for a new agreement employee. New employees are regularly layed off by entire classes after training. I have talked to numerous young people that are layed off and say they wouldn’t have come and moved their family had they known. Now everybody has a better idea of what UP is and that’s why people aren’t interested in working there.

There are homeless people starving that would take a job at UP, but the fact of the matter is among college educated graduates that didn’t major in liberal arts and have options, the idea of a career at UP is not even considered after doing a little market research.

The fact is UP was rated the worst company to work for because they are just that. No more excuses that is reality.

Not exactly true......no matter how much the current employees hate the company, there are still many people that would jump at the chance for a job here. There have been several times recently that I have been asked how to get a job with UP. I always discourage individuals when they ask about UP, but many don’t make as much, or have the benefits that we do. There will always be someone willing to take a chance on working here. Many I. This site (including me), complain and moan about the company and the leadership, but we are still working for UP. Why? Because of of the pay and benefits, or we live in an area where there are limited options an UP is the best of options ( at least for the time being).

I would not recommend UP as an employer, but I don’t believe college kids are laughing at the recruiters. Where are these job fairs being held? Most that I am aware of have been cancelled or are being conducted virtually. With the unemployment numbers in the country being what they are, most would look for a paycheck until a better opportunity arises. In many locations the opportunity to find a job with a great organization is nonexistent. It is better to have a job, draw a paycheck and gain experience, and wait for the economy to recover and find something better. Again, I would not recommend UP as a long term employer, but it may be someone’s best option , at least temporarily.

UP recruiters may be hoping that in a coronavirus-battered economy, desperate graduates will sign up in spite of everything bad that is known about the company.

At my alma mater, several of us went back to campus career counselors and department heads and gave detailed accounts of the toxicity of the UP culture, their mistreatment and overworking of their employees, and rampant racism, s-xism, and homophobia at every level of every department. As a result, the school stopped inviting them to campus career fairs, and didn’t renew UP sponsorship of campus events.

To anybody considering going to work for UP: don’t. Just don’t.

Former UP employee here. I am not a recruiter for my company, but I do get asked to go to colleges with our recruiters occasionally and speak with students in the classrooms when they’re having career fairs. This was before covid about 8 months ago. I witnessed some kids walk past the UP booth, which was a few down from ours. Loud enough for several of us to hear, one of them said: “my uncle works there and he says they’re laying off all the time.” It was funny. The UP recruiter either didn’t hear or pretended not to.

I'm a carman with another class one and my son is majoring in mechanical engineering. He has been told (threatened) that he is not to approach, talk to, or even look at any railroad recruiter whatsoever!
