If they really wanted to be fair, they would have asked for VR or offered early retirement for those with 10 or more years in...but didn't happen that way. My job was cut and it was tied to Covid, because there is no way that it would be gone without Covid happening.
The dollars being offered are not life changing but enough to keep you going for a while.

Yes - the Spec comp pay this past friday was the lawsuit settlement that you probably received notice back in November of 2019.
I believe the "Special Comp2" payment this week is related to the settlement of this Department of Labor discrimination case against Dell:

I got my call on Wednesday.
Also got the “special comp” deposit. No idea what it was for.. certainly not vacation pay.

@2qyv I got that, too. I believe I got something similar in past years when the math of my withholding was more properly accounted for. Or maybe the two of us are getting RIFfed. Time will tell.
I have a very silly question for the person who posted this about his/her layoff bit am getting very worried. I still haven't received any notification on my wfr but got a check deposited this week (out of regular pay cycle) to my account that says special comp 2, has some $$ and an interest payment. Does this imply anything as in maybe unused vacation time and my name is on the wfr list?
Is this layoff happening in India office and which team?

I think they want to keep the Fed Gov Stimulus loans major corps got -which had a clause attached in regards to loan forgiveness- that there would be no layoffs due to COVID-19.
So they've conveniently come up with another "reason" as for the need to layoff. Smart financial engineering ... (about the only engineering Dell is good at).
Dell is giving severance packages with WFR and those people are eligible for unemployment. This costs them much more than asking for VR.
I was also notified yesterday. Business is business... Nothing is a guarantee... Good luck to everyone impacted.
Why would they VR you (and have to pay you more) ... when thay can WFR you and pay you the minumum required by law. Corp America has no loyalty towards employees. It's about bottom line and Corp greed. Wake up and smell the coffee

I would happily take a layoff and speak nothing but good about it. Dell's been a great place to work but right now the work isnt there. Rather than just clipping people why not ask for VR's?
