Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Shame on ExxonMobil

You hired the brightest young professionals from top ranking institutions, and then fired them within a year or two without any prior feedback of nonperformance. Would you train or nurture these bright professionals or destroy their confidence and future? Here is what Exxon can do to earn the trust:

  1. Say sorry to these professionals and tell them it is not their fault that the business is not doing well. It is a lay off and not a reflection of their capabilities or performance. Atleast it is an honest
  2. Fire the managers who failed to train them; who did not provide timely feedback; who did not arrange for their professional development; who did not display any empathy.
  3. A manager with conscience would resign first before asking these wonderful young talents to resign with the threat of firing if they dont resign.

Tbh, it doesn't matter what you call this. At the end of the day, many people are being let go. Called this performance based or layoff doesn't mean anything to the broader job market.

Many of the young people got screwed, especially if they weren’t helping to increase the diversity quota. They are (mostly) bright and will bounce back and most will be successful. The ones to feel bad for are the over 50 crowd being thrown into a horrible job market and facing an age bias. They are the ones that got royally screwed by Darren Woods taking this BS approach so he could crow to the market about not laying employees off. Make no mistake, this IS a lay-off.

This is so interesting to read. During the good times people left XOM for better prospects elsewhere. It was more lucrative to have worked at XOM than to be working at XOM. The saying went, “hire the best, keep the rest.” So after years of people leaving once their career got going it is interesting to hear someone complain that now young professionals are being let go. I think it is a matter of perspective. No one complained about early career attrition during high oil prices, so no one should complain about getting fired during low oil prices.

Historically, XOM encouraged many 2 to 5 year employees to resign or PIP. XOM hired many smart, millenial SNOWFLAKES

As a parent I’m also disappointed in how this company’s false promises failed many new hires just starting out in their careers, but they’re the ones most likely to bounce back and develop resiliency due to this. I don’t doubt most of them will go on to have long and rewarding careers on their own merits instead of buying into a company’s (false) promises. I’d be much more worried about the 15+ year employees who grew complacent and are completely unprepared for today’s job market.

Aren’t you the parent that had this same post whining on behalf of your kid a few days back?

In this business there are many intelligent individuals. The ones that are kept check that box off and also have some experience. I would rather have a 30 year old with the same eduction than a nee hire with the exact education. I know a lot of 27-30 year olds that can drill wells with no problem. In these times there is less times to train and hold hands for a new hire. Plus, a 27-30 with 3-5 years experience don’t make that much more than a new hire.

Now we have the new hires parents coming onto this site to defend them? What is this, middle school?

Shame on you for not allowing your child to grow up and fight their own fights. Maybe that's part of the reason they were let go versus the other new hire peers that weren't PIP'd.
