Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Toxic work atmosphere

The culture in this company is very bad. Incompetent supervisors spend all their time brown nosing and working on their next job. Too many layers of middle managers who don’t have a clue on how to run a business. Systemic problem with people claiming credit for other’s work and ideas. Watch your back! Promotion and opportunities based on who you know rather than ability. Lacked diversity ... if you are a female, forget about promotion if you are not white.

In Exxonmobil, there are many women who are primary earners. I know many Exxonmobil women who earn more than their husbands and there are some Exxonmobil women who have stay at home husbands especially at the executive level. To get to executive you have to move around alot.Tht is hard on a spouse career. As women move up, you will see more of it. Also, Exxonmobil has a large fraction of dual Exxonmobil careers, nearly 10%. In know of several executives that are examples, but will not name them here. Also there are now many LGBT men and women in very high executive positions

Some women are the primary wage earners in a family, not ‘most’, and not ‘many’.

Many women are willing to relocate anywhere and often the primary earner. Many dual career couples are less flexible whether male or female, because they are trying to optimize both careers in one central location like Houston. For both, less flexibility means turning down assignments or limiting what gets offered. In the past, the women were not primary earners, this is no longer true, but many turn down the remote assignments. Many men also turn down the remote assignments, because spouse cannot get a job. It is not about male or female. It is about willingness to relocate or not willing to relocate. Those willing to relocate get more opportunities. There are lists of people willing to go anywhere and many of these jobs are high level.

The post about women s flexibility is total non-sense. Male has the same responsibilities in family too. Stop being like “ husband’s money is wife’s money and wife’s money is her own money” if you want a fairness between male and female. If you think a female cannot do the same as a male, then that s s-xist in 21 century.

The white males need to take assignments in Beaumont or Baton Rouge and international. Many of the women are less flexible (children or spouse working in Houston area) on Relocation so males who are willing to move can get great assignments and be broaden out across multiple locations and countries. This is especially true in Upstream. Are you ready to go to Russia, Iraq, Guyana, Qatar or Brazil? Flexibility means rapid advancement with big developmental opportunities

I think nowadays if you are female or white, you are much better off than others. Look at Baytown top management profile? 70-80% female now? and all white? Company tries to strike the balance between male and female. This is A very good thought. But when a female goes up, she only promotes female (I know there is someone doing that) and WIN ERG things make the whole networking and promotion easier. This then becomes a systematic problem. But no one dares to say anything about the over-done. Look at the People that are leading initiatives “diversity and inclusion”, 80% are white and they are 100% SLSs. Most of them are female. It is like when you are in BLM protest, you only see few Africa American Among the herd. Don’t talk about diversity and inclusion till you see more colors on the management layers. All initiatives are puppet shows

Agreed. I've seen them favor whoever kisses a–. Beyond race or religion or gender, its the people who don't speak up when there is a real issue, support the supervisors/management blindly, and go along with passive aggressive bullying of honest coworkers, those are the people being favored. They are incompetent 'yes men' being placed in important positions. Their behavior helps with their ranking too. Meanwhile employees with integrity, who follow the rules, point out important improvements, who are dedicated to the company's quality and safety practices, not only to their immediate bosses, are sidelined. How can this be good for the company going forward?

I agree all the way down to the white part. I think it depends on where you are. I’ve seen it both ways.
