Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

All Roads Lead to Huston

"All Roads Lead to Huston" that's what we were told the day before thanksgiving weekend several years ago when the NJRSC project was officially and publicly green-lit. Ever since then the rumor of the Clinton research site begin shipped to Huston in 10 years or less has been raging like a wild fire. Especially now that its proving to be an utter failure, thanks to poor management, not enough utilities, wildly underestimated costs and no room to begin with. Is there anyone out there with a "behind the curtain" POV that can lend some information to the younger demographic that already relocated to this hell hole and is not interested in going to Huston? Is this really happening? Any sort of timeline? Any info at all other than speculation?

ExxonMobil will not exist as we know it in 10 years. So of course it will be out of Clinton and Houston as well.

I reckon that EMRE will be out of Clinton in 5-10 years. It’s one of the main reasons that I didn’t relocate there from Paulsboro. The current organisation does not deserve to survive any longer. We were fed so much BS about the move - the synergies, the collaborations that were going to happen. Anyone with 5 years experience or more knew that this was a pack of lies, but they kept piling on the brown stuff and I can only think that our “leaders” believed their own lies

h-exxon deployed the most technologically disadvantaged equipment that is coming back to haunt facilities in modern times. h-exxon was not forward thinking and rushed to deploy capital.

The “person” (if there is one) behind NJRSC will not be thrown under the bus, even though we all know that it has turned out to be a disaster. Every time there is a bad strategic decision that flies in the face of logic, without fail we are later told “it was the right decision at the time.” Management can’t afford to break their own self delusion that they know what they’re doing.

I agree that the work output from Clinton has always been poor (as a 30-year h-Exxon employee at various locations, we could never figure out what the company was getting for the millions of dollars being poured in there). However, I do take exception to the opinion that Exxon brought down Mobil. Which version of a Windows operating system is being used is irrelevant. The only place I can think of where Mobil were ahead was Process Research and their fully automated units.

There are no consequences for management or management track as a previous poster said, irrespective of where you are in corporation Only learning experiences - except for rule violation. Besides, you can always blame the botched execution - and this was probably true in this case. BTW, person mentioned was NOT in charge of the execution of the move, only in charge of study. By now, though, everybody should know that most studies are just fiction on PowerPoint, settling on giving the answer that the upper management wants to hear.

My opinion: Clinton is not moving. It is improbable but still more likely to close completely than move to Houston. The corporation can not afford another move

Those who are saying Clinton Researchers and their management is epitome of low life, you haven't seen the pathetic employees, supervisors, leads, function managers and VPs etc. at URC. Entire URC thrived on nonsense — day in and day out.

Those who are at RTD and most former URCs who moved to different organization could be laid off with no remorse. The work life of most employees revolved around their performance assessment and expat assignments for some extra bucks (like cheeps) with no inclination to profitably contribute to ExxonMobil. Dumbness was cheered with vigor.

It's not a rumor. First, they're going to look for the person that was behind this debacle of a move: the fall guy, then the person who ordered it occur (if they haven't retired yet).

Second, they will move the site to Houston. It's already in the works - Gate 1.

Don't worry, the acres of rolling hills will be a memory of the tigers that used to roam its hallowed halls.

An organization bloated with "program leaders", "advisors" and coordinators going to meetings. Just look at CSR, 4 lab directors, 6 portfolio/ program leads, very expensive CL30+, plus a dozen senior advisors 30+ and another dozen section heads buried in the labs, all for supposedly self-driven 250 people. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians.

LOLOL - loved everything said about Clinton. “ They haven't produced anything significant for the business or science in decades, yet they celebrate themselves and shamelessly toot their own horn about the trivialities they fill their time with.” some good stuff all around :) . Maybe we should put all these thoughts into a book or a story we give to leadership for Christmas.

Mobil pulled down Exxon. Huh.

h-Exxon was still running Windows 95 during the merger while h-Mobil was on XP and had a standard global environment. h-Mobil was way more forward thinking (they had inclusion and diversity before h-Exxon stopped it after the merger) and had developed innovated technologies like Speedpass. h-Exxon's climate was stifling and cold and was afraid to take any risks.

Top executives have always been h-Exxon and look where the company is now.

Yeah...pumping more oil out of the ground will save us...while the rest of the world was also doing it as well as the fracking industry. D'uh.

It's an easy call to see who brought down whom.

One thing at a time.

  1. The rumor of Clinton moving to Baton Rouge or Houston is at least 30 years old. At one point XOM occupied only 1/4 of the site and they still held on to it. They brought Baton Rouge to Clinton, not the other way around
  1. Mobil whiners, always complaining... Did you know that they got 1 CL bonus at the merger (15% raise plus more promotion opportunities)? Did you know Mobil stock (and many retirement portfolios) got a 30% bounce at the merger announcement and kept it, while Exxon stayed the same? Did you know many of them were Exxon 80s layoffs and zipped up those years of service? Did you know those who didn't join at the merger and got 2 years severance, got rehired by their buddies after the two years they had to repay the package were up? Did you know anybody who is anybody at EMRE is h-mobil and promoted each other and turned the culture into the cliquy backstabby thing you see? They turned once-mighty Exxon into loser Mobil, down to the company size.. Still they complain ... get over your bitterness and go work someplace else, pal.
  1. Paulsboro survived the 1999 merger, the sale of the refinery... nearly 20 years, a few people out there in South Jersey producing nothing. Exxon is about consolidating, all small sites have been absorbed, Abington, Sarnia ... You are lucky you stayed in NJ, not shipped to Houston like the 2,500 people in Fairfax, and are still whining?
  1. Personal opinion: They just finished throwing money at it and declared victory, they cannot move it right away. It has at least 5 years. But, eventually, you have to go to Houston even if the site doesn't, because that's where careers are made. Given the track record. I think it is more likely to eliminate Downstream R&D altogether than move it to Houston. We are an upstream company after all.

Must be some die hard Clintonites in here. Very upset about the harsh realization that Closing Paulsboro and moving to Clinton was a complete ego trip to wipe out heritage Mobil. Clinton is an utter failure. The facility is garbage. Management is blind and clueless. The moral and a awful. The people are rude and nasty. It was a complete lie and a total down grade from the sheer size and potential of paulsboro.

Easy to point fingers and take cheap shots at everyone else and complain here anonymously but looking at oneself. What have you contributed specifically?

Entire Clinton Research Site is full of incompetent people. Management is weird and stupidly arrogant and they have encouraged an environment of celebrating incompetent researchers. The entire strategy relies on throwing money at certain universities and then someone goes around in the media advertising working on grand problems. The researchers are unable to produce high quality research which is very apparent in their abysmal publication record.

Yet Clinton site has an army of id–tic supervisors and line of managers – managing god knows what?
