Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Why are you still at Allstate?

So many unhappy people here who could be much happier working at other companies and yet most refuse to leave. My problem is that I like my job, that's why I'm on this page. That's why I fear layoffs. I would lose something I value. But so many of you absolutely hate this place. I'm honestly curious - why stay?

I totally agree. I love what I do and my coworkers and I work out butts off. I feel so stupid for trusting this company I have given my life's blood to. So sad.

"work for a company that offered a pension;". Current employees need to do the math! The cash pension is not really a pension. The amount you will receive at retirement is about 20% of what a defined benefit plan would have yielded. You would be much better off having the 5-7% dropped into your 401k since the cash balance pension only earns about 1% per year. The switch to cash balance "pension" is a sham that took away $ from employees.

I stay for the benefits and vacation time. I was excited to work for a company that offered a pension; but since I'm over 20 years away from retirement age, I probably won't get to use it. I'm safe this round, but I know more layoffs are coming.

I loved my job at Allstate, I was in denial that it was ending. August 16th will be my official last day. Why? Because I live in California and the company holds a grudge because of all the lawsuits that employees filed against the company. I have never benefited from any lawsuit. The greed of others and Allstate failure to follow laws caused me to loose my job.

Do not apply for Liberty Mutual without talking to someone about the job. That place is a meat grinder.

I would say just apply and apply and try to get your foot in the door. I got brought in as a contractor to a place and eventually got converted to a FTE (it took too long in my opinion but that’s a whoollle story there) it really did take about 2 years of applying though being honest

I have 2 resumes one show adjuster and the other analyst. Maybe I should throw my analyst application into the tech sector to see what happens. Any tips?

I applied for 2 years and said I was an analyst in liability. (I was a claims adjuster)... but people in tech literally don’t a thing about insurance. The word analyst helps a lot. Also I will say this -the problems that I experienced at Allstate and that I see on this board.. persist in the tech industry. If u don’t believe me look at random major tech Company layoff boards I.e. Cisco, Oracle, etc.

How you got a job in tech with no experience

I left Allstate, got a job in tech and almost tripled my income within 2 1/2years. No coding experience, I just know excel somewhat okay... Allstate was the the most lopsided-labor-intensive-toxic job I have ever worked. I seriously don’t get why people stay here

@nespf gets it. Extremely poor communication and tone deaf timing. Not to mention I'd volunteer but they don't want that

Allstate employees are some of the hardest working you will find in the industry. That's why there's so much longevity. I don't have an issue with the layoffs. I have an issue with how it's been handled. We are in tough times and Allstate hasn't handled this well at all, leaving people in the dark about their status etc. Make the cuts you are going to make. Make it swift and sure and give people the news directly and quickly so they can make decisions. The death of thousand cuts isn't good for the company nor the individual.

I don't work for Allstate but have had the pleasure of meeting many dedicated employees and can say, without a doubt, that they have been some of the hardest working and loyal people I know. Restructuring a company is inevitable but allowing people to twist in the wind is wrong, just plain wrong.

That’s a really broad question for complex individual situations. Stop rubbing salt in the wounds.

Good money, good opportunity, work with good people, and ironic enough... job security. I've been unfortunate enough to be in a role that's both necessary and growing. It also helps to be one of the lead people on the team.

It does pain me to see the loss of my friends and coworkers though, which brings me here. There's actually a really good opportunity near by I've considered, but so far I've decided to keep doing what I'm doing because the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I’m sure there are people who don’t like their job/Allstate. But, most of the frustration and negativity you’ll find here is reactionary to the recent ongoings, mistruths and processes that have been happening, derived from managements actions.

It really is scandalous and it’s reasonable for individuals to feel the way they do. No one likes to hear their company is going to be laying off people. However, it’s hard for most to comprehend how a very successful and profitable (with recently reported increases in profitability) company can be doing this to it’s dedicated staff. If Allstate were in the red or hurting financially, I think more would understand. But that’s just not the case.
