Stay at work after signing PIL?

My deadline to choose PIP or PIL is on a Wednesday and I was told Thursday and Friday would be for handover!? I’m done with this company! Why would I even show up Thursday if I sign separation on Wednesday? Is there any way I would forfeit the PIL not showing up Thursday after signing on Wednesday?

Hope companies secretly hiring take advantage. I have no doubt most of the people here will be an advantage to competitors.

@rka+16p9XKhn - ha ha. Nice try, troll. You have no idea of my job, the quality and quantity of my work, or me as a person.

I know from previous years, that my work was valuable and I did it very well. No one is saying that their role or their work was critical to the company’s success, but in many situations the selection of staff for NSI appears to have no basis in relative performance, ability or experience. So I wish trolls would stop coming onto this site just to say “you were weak, you were poor performer”, as this is clearly not true for many.

In my case, despite having over 10 years (including 2019) of outstanding positive feedback from “knowledgeable others”, I appear to have fallen significantly in the rankings for no apparent reason.

The only rationale I can consider as even remotely possible stems from: (1) I am “retirement eligible” (as opposed to being able to afford to retire); (2) I was only a consistent middle-third performer; and (3) I had an antagonistic relationship with my current boss. It seems to me that (1) and (3) outweighed everything else.

I’d confirm with your supervisor

  • on what date you will be relieved of all your duties (turn in company property, badge, etc)
  • on what date the 3 month period will begin

See if you can get the response in writing.

I found that the first page listing your options and timing is NOT part of the actual agreement, so may be subject to change at Company‘a discretion. I checked with my boss prior to signing and found out the date I would sign the agreement would be the date I would be relieved of all my duties (turn in Company equipment, badge, etc). The next day began my 3 month period staying on payroll during this time.

All the best to you!

You signed your rights away to sue, if they fire you then they have to give your right back (and probably no pay ) but no sane manager would do that right now. I would just drop off the laptop and say adios and smile big. Good things are in store! There’s always sunshine after rain! Do what feels right with your head held high - this company is built on rule followers and scared people to do the right thing and what feels right. Don’t be one of them!

You'll at least get two additional days pay. I took PIL in early July and was finished one week later. All the paperwork indicates my "three month pay" starts on my last day of work, not the day I signed the PIL.

It’s just 2 days.. show up, make merry and get payed. They have labelled you as a poor performer.. so just take your knowledge (Keep it to yourself) and walk away.. doubt they have any expectation of you.

Do what they tell you to do, or you risk being terminated during your PIL. I would have loved to delete all of my files and folders before I left, information that I had spent years putting together (while being rated a “good” performer), but couldn’t risk giving them an excuse to fire me. Their reasoning would be that they paid me to find all that information and solve problems, spit all belongs to them anyway. I just hate the thought of one of those brown nosing a–holes who survived this cut being able to do my job because I left a guide on how to do it.

Yeah your PIL 3 months’ pay goes in effect the date you sign the form. I don’t think they legally can force you to continue to work after that date. Sounds sketchy.

You are given severance for separation and for signing all your rights away, you are not a regular employee and on proper payroll for those 3 months

Yes, it seems like they want to take advantage of people even after separation. The 3 months of pay is nothing for Exxon, by signing that you are giving away your right to sue and that’s what they are after. You can dump all your work somewhere and they can deal with it themselves. People are going through a lot of angst and negative emotions, you should not be expected to put in good work after being told to resign. That’s the epitome of shadiness. You were labeled a poor performer and now you’re the one supposed to show how much you care by providing them an “ excellent transition of your work”?. They need to get what they labeled you for which is poor performance.

Some are still trying to work really hard and are hoping to get their jobs back after being put in PIP. What advice would you give them?

XOM may keep them after PIP to throw more dust in the eyes of outside scrutiny.

Who believes that the supervisors have an ability to be fair and rational, and even have the mental capacity to understand valuable contribution? If your performance was judged low after 10 years of work by certain group of individuals, will the perception really change in 3 months?

Did you read the fine print? Do as they ask or they can/WILL stop paying you. After all they are TIGERS!

You'll still be in payroll for 3 months so just do what they want or else, they'd cut your pay. Besides, your PIL waiver states that you turn in your machine within a week of signing that PIL, so a day of turnover won't hurt.

I have not heard of this yet but it serms absurd to be asked to show up to work for at a company you no longer work for.
