Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Who determines who gets laid off?

Do direct supervisors get the final say since they are the ones who are supposed to know best who are the real contributors and who are not or is it somebody up the chain who knows nothing more about the people he or she is deciding on than their name and pay?

Considering who gets laid off and who stays all the time, I doubt it's the first one.

Are you really still trying to come here and spew this garbage? All of these people were not ranked low and most were told they would not get through a PIP. Others saw it was unrealistic. That’s because it’s not a measure of performance but a disguised lay-off to avoid severance.

You determine if you are laid off or not.. Maybe if your performance was just a little better than it was, you wouldn't have been NSI...

The determination of who is assessed as NSI is made in the assessment meeting by the supervisors/managers doing the assessments. In most cases, those are the employees’ direct supervisors. There’s no smoke and mirrors or back room deals being made. The list stands at the end of the assessment meeting and the people in the room own it. Not HR, not Dallas.

It really all depends on your Skype photo.

I can tell you without fear of contradiction, that in Permian your supervisor has little to no say as to whether you stay or go. That determination is made by the egocentric duo at the very top of the food chain. All of that b—s— about your supervisor "owning" the results of your ranking is just hot air. That's the way it works here. Hopefully other divisions treat their underlings better.

My feeling is that supervisors simply picked the employees they least liked. I’m sure that mine picked me because I know my job better than him and argued with him about nearly everything he wanted to change - because he didn’t understand what he was trying to change and how it would make things worse. XOM managers (for God’s sake, don’t call them “leaders”) only want “yes men” and not critical thinkers. That’s why the company has been going to hell for the last 10 years or so

The token answer from HR is the direct supervisor. The truth is a CL29 will pick the decision to pieces if it isn’t the one they want.
