Do you know how does the actual act of communicating that you've been laid off happen? What do they tell you? How long does it take?

Make sure you record it in case they mess it up.
I’ve sat on both sides of the table delivering the message and being told I’m getting LRd. Both sides s—. Just put your big boy underwear on and embrace the s—. Packages will be sweet this round.
Are the LR packages offered decided by the number of years service?
I've been in whole rooms whereby the VP (who was based in EMEA) joined the room (of 50+ people) and told them over TP that they were laid off and to pick up their "packet" on the way out. Everyone had to sign in at the entrance to the room to prove they were there.

It's not human, it's not emphatetic... devoid of all emotions...
Money is offered, exchanged. Ciao, forever...
I got axed in August 2019. This is 100% accurate (mine was under 10 min, 22 years with the company):
A 1:1 Webex invitation arrives in the evening for the next day from the Sr Director or another in your chain. The meeting begins and swiftly moves to the termination of position. Comments & questions are unanswered, meeting ends. The moment it ends, an email arrives with the termination letter, severance, COBRA, etc package. Total time is less than 11 minutes and that is if one has been with the company 20+ years.
Don't look at it as a bad thing... you'll be free. There's plenty more money to be made out here. :) Come work for me.
I am in the USA but I want to have the meeting in Spanish. Is there a Spanish version of the script? What if my mgr/director does not speak/read Spanish?
I was the same as the last poster.....my boss and I didn't even setup a 1:1. I just texted him when I was free to have the LR discussion and he called...we chatted for less than 1 minute (I already knew the script, and he knew I knew).
There is ZERO point in asking questions.....they have a script and are legally bound to read it without deviating. After the script is done, you are free to do whatever you want for at least a month (or whatever timeframe they tell you can search for non-existent internal jobs).
Just ask what the number is on the bottom right hand corner of page 6 then hang up on the dweeb.

When I got hit it took about 1 minute. I knew it was coming, parroted the script back to him that I had given way too many times. He kept wanting to talk to me and I just kept telling him, just send me the package already. I already know there is no point in discussing anything.
Forget this rubbish. They aren’t going to send out 1:1 any time soon.
This time they are doing it differently.
October 7th, though, you’ll know.
mgr is gonna read that script for 15 minutes? that's too long, maybe 10 pages. 30 seconds should be sufficient to tell me that my role has been eliminated.
Because of legal reasons and threat of a lawsuit, the Legal team has prepared a script. The manager cannot deviate from it, offer any commentary, or anything else. It is pretty inhumane and emotionless for the manager, at least at that time.
"A business decision has been made. A number of positions have been eliminated. Your position is one of those that have been eliminated. You will have xx days to find a new position within Cisco. This decision is final. You will be receiving an e-mail that you will need to confirm that we have had this discussion. At that time you will receive the details on the severance package. Your job responsibilities end immediately."
With minor variations this is the script. Only takes 15 minutes if the manager strays from the script and runs the risk of a lawsuit by talking too much and saying things like "I'm sorry", "it wasn't my decision","it was a performance issue", "It's because I don't like you". etc.
It's a quick 15 minute script... you'll never forget
Agreed. Fast, short and precise. Look for a 1:1 mtg with someone in your management change, possibly on short notice.
Q1 is ER. Fear LR in Q2. 15 min, short and sweet. They have it down to numbers and science at this point. Sharp as a razor.
