Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So they wack thousands of people here, now they are promoting here?

I am not going to post what organization, as I don't want this traced back to me.

So they wack people for the last 5 years where I am at, like most orgs.

Then they reorganize, and squash groups together and make the span of control too large? Rinse and repeat. And repeat some more. Many 3rd and above disappear. Good!

So now they are seeking people to promote. They are asking for candidates! But what they did was created a 3 and a half "unofficial" level and announced the first promotions to this hybrid level to decrease span of control of the 4ths. So what it seems to be is that they created a 3rd level to do a 4th level work without giving them a 4th level. Just what we need, another layer of mismangement!

How long before they start creating these "half" steps for all the VP's, SVPs, AVPs and xyz they wacked over the last five years and creating more layers of mismanagement?

Oh but I am sure they will be wacking again by December.

The gross mismanagement of this company is just bewildering... Same old same old...

Please, please, offer another MVO!!!

Associate directors fall into that half-step bunch. They are still level II people, so they don't get level III benefits like stock grants and the higher bonus percentage. They created the AD level to appease younger workers looking for a title and the prospect that it would turn into a director level later. I know a lot of people who have been ADs for years with zero prospect for promotion. They don't make level III assignments easily and getting one is like pulling teeth in many orgs. After all, the company doesn't want to pay the additional $50-60K per year for a level III. Yes it is at least that much of a difference. Level III individual contributors have it made and there are only about ten level IV individual contributors in the whole company. Those are the sweetest jobs. No people..... $200K+ base. 25% bonus and annual stock grants around $75K. All you need is a PhD in neuro-science or something.

I had a great 20 year run at AT&T, and I appreciate every opportunity the company has given me to make a great life for myself and my family. That said, the past 5 years have been a total shiitake show beyond imagination. It’s clear that management wants a 95% H1B, from India workforce. God bless, and God help America, and future generations.

I can vouch for the asininity. I was an Associate Director and had three AD peers reporting, and we all reported to a director. After the haircuts, we were all below the new desired span of control of 12-15. So now I, an AD, have three ADs reporting to me...and they all have ZERO direct reports. That's correct - supervisor titles with zero direct reports (like how is that any better than if we all had 8 people reporting to us???).

But I'm supposed to let them manage their old teams "as per usual" while I actually have to deal with the paperwork from more than 30 people.

the fortune 500 company I work for are playing it smart and are not doing any reorgs until this covid crud is behind us. so far it has been paying dividends and creates a secure, fun, and focused environment and we have been increasing revenue, customers and the employees are happy. att is a cesspool and leaving was the best decision I ever made and I hope and folks wanting to work run far far far far far far far away and never look back. life is too short for att.

"Your fired..., you there, your hired!" Standard Operating Procedure here at the Death Star. It's how we've made ourselves so successful at being giant failures.

They've been doing this for a while. In Mobility the Area Managers are L2. Many of thee L2's teams are made up of L2's. So it is common for you as an L2 AM to have many L2's on your team reporting to you, that make more than you. And your # of directs (span of control) gets larger with every reorg.
