Involuntary Retirement

lets skip the bs and plaintalk, this layoff is a forced retirement of older workers. no if and or buts. any other claim is a fallacy

"AI will be used to self diagnose HW/SW stacks and eliminate the "network" expert requirement."

Did Elon Musk promise that ? Along with fully autonomous cars on the streets already some 5 years ago ??

But how to get voluntarily on the list. If they know you'll leave they can save the money. Asking for a friend....

It's only great if you can actually retire. If you are in your 50s, or even far worse 60s, and need to work still, your odds of find a job that pays close to what you make now are extremely limited. Age discrimination is rampant. Companies will be in transition in 5-10 years as the older, loyal workers are gone, and this new younger generation are nothing but temporary employees. Companies will be mostly contractors in 10 years. It will be much cheaper to pay $100/hr without any other benefit. If the kid can't do the job like 70% of them, then they can dump them with no impact. No severance or anything. Just exit them immediately and laugh as they go.

I am so glad I am out of that rat race. Nice stable employment with pension and excellent benefits. It sure beats having to deal with any of this corporate politics stuff anymore in the tech fields.

I have never heard of Jeff White. What did he used to do in Cisco. When did he leave Cisco and why? RIP Jeff.

I would like to leave (as soon as I land a new job) , but since I'm a young, high performer, I probably won't end up on the LR-list after the ER - I understand it's decided by the local business leaders, not "top down"(?) . Is my only option just to quit, or is there any way to save a teammate on my way out?

Time for old to leave and make way for the new. Unfortunately technology shifts faster and faster and constant change is the norm. Many cannot keep up. AI will be used to self diagnose HW/SW stacks and eliminate the "network" expert requirement.

Over 50 is a protected class in the US and harder to lay off. Yes, they’ve got the check book out I’m here for it.

None of the younger people is staying around for any longer time than maybe two or three years. Constant jumping the ship is the new normal.

Definitely, but not a bad thing for the old Cisco guy. Take the $$ and go compete!

@icb+16t4JunK out with the old, in with the new. Less hardware, more software, subscriptions, security, services etc. A company this rooted in technology that's very mature if not stagnant , needs to make changes.

This is a way to tell that older folks 50+ years irrespective of your Cisco experience are no longer required. Cisco is promoting all the managers to hire young and generally doesn't give pay-hikes to older folks working in Cisco for a long time, specially a big population of Grade 10, 11, 12. Managers are forced to keep them because of their networking knowledge of the product, as younger folks think networking is not a cool area to work. So this is a way to signal those oldies to get out.
