Reasons why you were NSI-ed / PIP-ed

Now that people had some time for self reflection what are some of the reasons why you think you got PIP-ed? Some examples that I’ve seen on this forum: asking too many questions, manager did not like you or you were fed up with their style, disability, mentioned retirement so somebody thought they are helping you out by giving you the option, had a bad year personally, did not come to work in person during Covid, did not provide enough praise to your manager and their manager etc. What kept you from achieving your true potential in case there is some truth to the NSI?

Speak up, be bold, leave the company without looking back!

I know many more (who survived PIP) getting ready to retire. I expect a wave of retirements this year. With great lump sum discount rate and risk of Biden getting elected and raising taxes, this is a good year to retire. The Supplemental Pension, pays out in cash and is taxed at high marginal bracket. Some may decide to retire in January, so they are in lower bracket (and before Biden raises taxes). I expect 3Q, 4Q and 1Q21 to have a steady flow of retirements especially those over 58.

Again I will say
Everyone who speaks out about this becomes a target.

I questioned why we’re heavily relying on the BTC. I have a great working relationship with our counterparts in AP, but I was deemed hostile because I pointed out that we have been wasting time and resources training 2nd and 3rd tier personnel instead of trying to optimize our workflows and pursue projects not labeled as “digital.” I haven’t seen any improvements with the BTC because half of them leave after a few months and those that stay can not grasp the simplest of our processes.

Guess questioning management is a cardinal sin that is not forgiven by the likes of the UIS president. And it was either my head or that of my supervisors for not getting rid of me for asking questions. Taking retirement and not coming back even if they paid me twice my rate as a contractor when the sh– hits the fan.

PIPed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time - and won't be beating myself over it!

They want you to think you are somehow inferior - don't do it. It's not you, it's them!

@tct+16wemWI6 No I do not. I also believe this excused for a lot more who are “retirement age” rather than who actually show an interest in retiring. I’ve seen HR around asking these people if they want to retire. A PIP is simple a means to make it happen sooner.

OP here - I am not a manager and got PIP-ed myself. The post might have been taken the wrong way - apologies for that. I think we all have some assumptions why. The disability one seems so heartless to me yet I’ve seen it quite a lot of times here. I was just curious around other trends.

I'll repeat one more time - a quote from here I saw yesterday:

Majority of skilled professionals that were PIP'd will get relevant jobs with a Stable company with a future.

Those that have been in the XOM 'Managerial' system more than 3 years (and I quote):
"Dog-shift guard in a privatized prison has an opportunity for You."

Now - mind you - your 4Q20 or 1Q21 offer.
The PiL letter, legally worthless, will not mention this to a 'managerial'.
But simply a fact.
You've lost all expertise in your field. You're a drained field.

Really? You think they're going to take retirement-eligible employees (55+ and 15+) and fire them before giving them a chance to retire?

Surely that's a recipe for lawsuits, isn't it?

Perhaps I am mis-reading your post?

Does anyone think knowing they laid off some high performers, the strategy was to deter competitors from hiring? Similar to a legal blacklist?

A mix of age/high salaries on one end, and those younger employees the company has little invested in. The Process organization was largely unscathed, the heads rolling are almost all individual contributors. And Lord help you if you don’t have a really strong advocate right now. It’s never been more important to have a sponsor that’s safe themselves, and committed to keeping you safe. And it’s not easy, in many cases, bosses are sacrificing their direct reports to try and save their own jobs. It’s literally every man (woman, undecided) for themselves right now.

I don’t see where anyone posted they were PIP’d because someone thought they wanted to retire and were doing them a favor How ridiculous would that be? I’d this more cua for xom?

You forgot the post that said supervisors/managers were told they had to cut a certain number and could not leave the room until they did. Another post noted that two managers refused to have those conversations because they thought none of their people deserved to be pip’d and those managers were terminated.

To cast the first stone, when you are personally and professionally not perfect. No one is faultless and therefore, no one has such a right to pass judgment.
You are obviously a manager hiding behind your anonymous post. Take a look at yourself for once and look at what you have not done in your department to bring your team together, and to bring out the best in all of your people. Each member of a team brings different skills and qualities to a team. It is the managers job to see those attributes and build a great team. Not try to knock them down and put fear in them. You like feeling strong and powerful and like to make people feel vulnerable.
Those above you, will be weeding you out as the troublemaker and either fix you or fire you. You have been identified as a problem by looking at your patterns of verbal abuse and who has trouble keeping staff because everybody wants out of your department. You will be out soon, you have done too much damage to the organization for your own self interest.
