Toxic Managers

A bit off topic, but is there a way to get rid of a toxic manager at Cisco? He clearly favors cerrain race, s-x and background within the team when it comes to promotions and bonuses though he would never admit it. There are also lots of other issues, I've tried HR but they don't... well you know the story

You know what, my manager was like a warrior, and told me "why don't you talk to HR?!" because he knew HR will protect him.

So, it might be his manager abusing him, and then he can abuse me. How is it that much different from layers of Mafia?

HR pretends they are blind or deaf.

And then, if they find one positive behavior about the manager that is not really that relevant, they blow it out like playing a trumpet.

And then they say, the manager is OH so goooood, and you'd better leave.

HR is not there to help you, but to protect the company. I had an issue with a director. He would tell me one thing, then deny it and say something else with witnesses. When I told him in front of witnesses that I didn't know what he expected because of his changing stories, suddenly he and I were meeting with HR and I was the "bad guy" and HR was there to "protect" the director from false allegations. Soon I was on a PIP and then LR'd because it was easier than faking the necessary paper trail proving I wasn't doing my job properly.

While many people in HR who are just handling benefits and payroll questions are OK, those that deal with disciplinary issues are heartless. I don't know how they can do their jobs and look people in the eye as they screw them over.

HR employees, most of them, are the ones who are protecting and nourishing toxic managers.
Manager can be replaced when many of them within a group complain to upper level.

Get out of that group or leave the company. Plan it out and execute it.

You can log a grievance w/ Employee Relations (ref. COBC on how to) - anonymously if you choose. Employee Relations will ask the [toxic] employee's manager to talk to them. Whether the mgr follows-through or not is a different story.

Talk directly to VP or SVP of the BU. They might help you. Let them know your situation.

You must switch companies. Toxic managers can prevent you from transferring internally. A high-performer was being abused by a manager, and was able to land an internal offer from another team. The toxic manager blocked the transfer stating the high-performer was critical to the department.
