Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Job Grading

I am in R4 and have been told that I will be getting my own job by my boss and to not apply to 4 positions as to not overwhelm the slates. The problem I have is that when I got this position the grade was career ladder 21-23. Now it is posted as 21-22. As a 22 does this mean I cannot be promoted for a number of years? I have already been a 22 for 5 years and would like an opportunity to advance. Does anyone have constructive feedback?

You do not have the option to decline the offer if you posted for the job. Beware of bad advice.

Was your boss in R2 or R3 and they are in?

DO NOT listen to your boss. In absolutely no sessions has that guidance been given! You need to apply for four positions.

The issue isn’t whether I can get a promotion or will be demoted; it’s that I can’t even post for the freaking job that I am doing now. I talked to friends in other parts of the org and some saw the same thing. I really believe this is intentionally done by the corp to get rid of older and higher pay grade employees. So much for Chevron Way behavior. I am truly disgusted by what I see.

It’s not going to be a demotion if it is into a career ladder job though. Conversely if you post up to a career ladder bracket you will also not get a promotion. So we are not going to see the large number of promotions like we did in round 3.

You can turn down a job that is offered in writing as a demotion (even if applied for) and still receive severance. Read the enhanced plan guidelines.

That’s the problem - some of us can’t because they conveniently downgraded by more than 1 level the jobs we are doing now, which means we can’t even post for our own job. How can you possibly justify such downgrading? Either TR was totally incompetent before and grossly over valued the jobs or maybe CVX is playing perfectly legal ageism games and downgraded jobs to push out the dinosaurs and make room for the younger, cheaper labor. In the end, they will f*** something up, but who’s gonna be there to notice or hold them accountable? If any of us are still around, we probably will have to come around with a giant p–per scooper to do the job that folks management selects in round 4 are not prepared to do. That’s been my observation the past few years. This company USED to be a great place to work - not so much these days.

Job Grading? In this slaughterhouse environment, ANY JOB is better than no job. Keep the one you have now if possible.

The new tool used for the posting does not allow for 3 psg ranges i.e 21-23, only 2 psgs variance.
Any career ladder job does not have a ceiling and you can be promoted, however the fact that it was posted 21-22 and not 22-23 means that management considera that the job can be done by a 21 or 22, even a 20 posting up, so unless you ate doing something beyond the role, it may not grant a 23.

A couple of clarifications. First, In a career ladder position you can still be promoted later to a higher PSG than the job bracketing in the current transformation. Also if you are applying down a PSG you will still keep your existing PSG if it is a career ladder job. This does not apply for placed jobs. Second if you apply for a job you cannot subsequently turn it down and still receive severance.

The sneaky downgrading of positions was really shameful. In mycase, my job was downgraded by 2-3, so I can‘t even apply. It’s a clever and totally legal way for them to commit ageism; think about it. My boss told me that if I stick around, I’ll be doing my old job anyway or at least answeringnonstop questons ‘cause aint no way A 19 is skilld enough. I wish I could Eoi.

If you want to advance, you want to be in a position that has growth opportunity. That means you want to be in a role that includes 23. Otherwise, 5 years is going to turn into 10. Unfortunately, now may not be the time to try to stretch into new positions because “staying employed” is probably the priority. PDRs are being, uh... “energy efficient” [lazy] because this is such a huge, complicated process with lots of moving pieces. They just want to put incumbents back into the same roles because it’s the path of least resistance.

Apply for 4 jobs. You have nothing to lose. Even if you keep a 22 job, you can still be promoted later. Take what you can get for now.

You may have to post for a PSG 23 outside of your current job since it looks like it has been re-graded, However, definitely apply for4 positions (your current job plus three others) in R4. You don't want to risk the chance of not being selected for anything.

If your boss said that, he/she needs to be reported to the Transformation HR office. That is absolutely NOT the guidance that selection reps or job owner reps are providing. Extremely disappointing to here.

Apply for 4 positions.

You can still get the job at same PSG you have, as the previous poster said, applyfor 4 jobs that is your right and if you get a lower PSG job you can decline and still be eligible for severance.

This is not the time to listen to your boss and be a sheep, this is survival time, fight with all your strength.
