LR impact - Will employee know in advance?

Does the manager let employees know in advance if he/she is part of LR or at least give a hint to the employee if he/she is part of LR?

... Typically my PTO requests are dealt with in half a day, it's been 4 x reminders over the 3 weeks and my PTO has not yet been approved.

I'm betting that HR has instructed managers to not approve PTO requests for that week in case you're on the list. During a previous LR, my manager had already approved the PTO request for someone who ended up on the LR list and he had to call him on his mobile while he was out of state on PTO to tell him he was being LR'd.

It's not 100% certain that you're on the list, but it's not a good sign. And, being on PTO won't stop the notification.

You may also get an email asking your current physical work location. Like, bxb, etc. If you get this email like 3 weeks out you are done. 100%

Why would anyone need to email you? HR has that info. Managers should already KNOW that info. HR has your address for your paycheck/tax purposes.

First line mangers do not know who will be laid off prior. Comes downward. Most of the time they just play dumb, you cannot blame them, they really do not know. They know who their bottom people are, but do not know how far up the cut will be.

I've witnessed a manager switch business people into software engineers before a layoff. To save the jobs of friends & family.

Managers give the list of people and their tasks at hand along with their grade and IPF to the director in chain , who passes that to SVP & team.
SVP & team is the one who takes the call and see if the employee is in any project which generates revenue or If there is any need in future projects on line which generates revenue.
Managers might know who might get impacted in advance , but the official list would be sent to them in that week or so..

I've put in legitimate PTO to take the family away on a short holiday first week October. Typically my PTO requests are dealt with in half a day, it's been 4 x reminders over the 3 weeks and my PTO has not yet been approved.

Very true on the "friend" part. Work is work but separate "friendship" and work relationships.

Thought I made some great "friendships" at work; looking out for each other through family issues (covering their work while they had to take time off). Built the nice group slides on "teamwork" that were shared up the chain.

Once you are out all these great teammates and co-worker "bonds" will quickly dissipate, because you now are LR'd damaged goods.

Not everyone will shun you, just some, and then you will hear the interesting stuff on how some of your teammates talk trash on you.

BTW don't expect me to ever help move your stuff from one house to another, change your flat tire in the Cisco parking lot, or invite you over for a cookout :)

Peace Be With Us All

unless the manager himself/herself are impacted and then goes one level up, most manager don't know however, the Director or VP for sure will know, unless that director is being impacted as well..

It is true they don't know until very close to the timeframe, but they all can guess and you too, most the older, the more expensive, will be fired 1st..

what is extradinaroy is that these so called friends of you will start to distance away from you unless these friends are fired also.. you will be viewed as a plague and no one want to be associated with you. whatever decision you made will be viewed as garbage, even though they still use it. you will be blamed for everything that is related to bad, even though you have these awards everywhere on your wall..I have some friends went back to Cisco and somehow hide their traces ..

layoff bring the worst of people, you view the world very differently from that moment on..

you will see people doing nothing get to keep the job and you will be fired, then some of them goes to directorship and look at you at target shopping, and somehow give you that look,

I got laid off in '16 as well. However, I never got advanced warning like some people on this site nor did I get a 1:1 invite. This of course was pre lockdown l simply reported to work on Tuesday expecting a normal day when that morning my manager came and asked if we could talk for a few minutes in a private room and proceeded to lay me off.

From Jan, it is obvious that world was going to be in remote work lifestyle. The BU and people that were responsible to sense this trend and capitalize on it did nothing. Absolutely nothing. What is astonishing is they are all still there and will likely be glorified even more.... for what exactly... for sitting and watching as the world moved to remote work.

Manager not knowing who in the team is going to get LRd is BS. They are the ones that would have proposed your name. They wont let you know ahead of time. If you are the list, be happy. You are forced to move from a rut to different place. However you look at it, you are not going to upgrade your skills there. It is for the people who can talk their way out but to no one else. That is why we see Cisco stock plunging because year after year, there is no substance.

In many cases, the manager doesn't know until the week of. They won't risk their own job to give you a hint. I was, and still am, a friend with my previous manager who had to let me go back in '16.

He told me much later that he found out the middle of the week prior. He sent out an email to the entire team to watch/listen to the earnings call an hour before the event and left for the day. During the earnings call, Chuck mentioned that there would be a huge LR. An hour after the earnings call, I get an email from my manager with an untitled/unexplained 1-on-1 meeting request for the next morning. That was all the hint/notice I received. I texted his mobile asking if the 1-on-1 was what I thought it was and I could see that he'd read the message, but he didn't reply. I went into the office after dinner and cleaned out my desk. Next morning, we met, he read his speech that HR provided, and he said we could meet for lunch in a couple of days. I won't say what we talked about at that lunch, but HR probably wouldn't be very happy if they knew.

Another manager who had an employee on a PIP a few years prior, about 3 weeks prior to the LR suddenly stopped giving out "goals" to be accomplished by the next 1:1 and then, the week the LR announcements were supposed to be made, cancelled the Thur afternoon 1:1 and replaced it with a Tue morning 8AM 1:1 which was the LR notification. It was clear to all that the invite that was sent on Fri afternoon was all the head's up they were going to get. And the manager worked from home that Monday so they couldn't be asked any questions.

All I can say is watch your manager's behavior/attitude towards you. Which will be hard to do given everyone is now working remotely. But if you're not getting new tasks or if they're minor and easy for anyone else to pick up or redo, you're probably at risk.

How about you tell the manager to F off and just send you the details in an email?
