Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This shouldn't be happening

And yet it never surprises me when it does. Two managers left recently. They just announced who'll be replacing them. To say that they couldn't have picked worse people to promote would be an understatement. Instead of choosing people with knowledge and experience, the resident a–kissers got ahead once again. What is wrong with this place?

A few years back my manager asked me about one of my former direct reports that had applied for a promotion to work on our team. I provided honest performance information. The person was good at dodging work and taking credit for others work. The person lied about some significant matters and when called on it promptly went to another business unit. All of this was documented on line in that persons records. Turns out that person was best friends with my manager (found out later.) The manager hired that person, who was no where near qualified. The manager treated me like c-ap until I moved to another group. The person hired was later let go, for obvs reason. The manager was also laid off. Im still here. That kind of mentality (hire your friends) almost always backfires. The thing is... managers still do it. Be glad you are qualified and contributing and consider the fact that you didnt get the job a blessing. The higher you go the easier it is to be let go.

I think uqz meant "drivel" not "dribble" but I needed that laugh! Common sense certainly does dribble at a slow drip from the top down at this company.

OP, I've seen it happen too many times to count over many years. The knowledge is walked out the door and management among other positions are filled by the clueless. This isn't the only company with the same problem.

The 'hire-able' or 'not re-hire-able' was as abused ad the PIP. Both tools used by managers not worth their salt and intimidated by the ones they were victimized.

To the OP and anyone this matter concerns, let them have it. You don’t need the headache. You’re better off being the rank and file. Deadlines, performance issues, Safety Metrics and weekly coverages are for the birds. No one needs the stress, especially for the amount of pay. Count your blessings and slap your head if the thought ever crosses your mind. I did 18yrs as a Tech and 22yrs as a Supervisor. The Supervisor role was everything you never wanted and more.

We have two first lines in my org. retiring by the end of this year. It’s all but guaranteed the area manager will move one of his golfing buddies into one or both of those roles. He’s part of the problem here at T and I don’t ever see it changing.

The org I am in (I will not name) is notorious for not promoting at all from within. Their lack of promotions from within has been near the top of the NPS problems since they started the NPS nonsense.

Anyway, my manager took the MVO last January. They named his temporary replacement , which was one of his reportees till April. The replacement is pretty sharp technician, but that does not mean he is a people person.

Anyway, come April, with a LOT of fanfare, they official promote him "permanently" to be my manager. To his credit, he really jumps in and concentrates on his managing people verse trying to keep his hands in the technical issues.

Then comes last month, and they bring in a person from outside the organization, and lateral him in to be my manager. They "demote" the first guy back to his old role. As far as I now, the replacement did not thing wrong and was doing a good job learning to be a manager. But who knows?

I kind of would have been p-ss-d and quit if it were me. Not sure exactly why they did this. Certainly, they will continue to get low NPS scores on the career path issues if they ever bother to do NPS anymore.

T s—s!
