Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T CEO & Board of Directors - Read this

AT&T needs to stop chocking and instead it must unlock its value by simply breaking up into 4 different companies (with or without a matching deal with Comcast) as follows:

1) Spin off DirecTV to merge it with Dish, which could then be potentially merged with a Comcast spin off of their Cable TV and ISP.

2) Spin off AT&T wireline/landline/tv business (except a few key states containing wireless backbone) or sell either as part of the deal (item 1) or to another company such as CenturyLink or Charter Communications, etc.

3) Spin off Warner Media back on its own or even better merge it with Comcast's, a perfect combination to compete with Disney

4) Keep AT&T as pure wireless for 5G, 6G... and become a technology company, offering advanced wireless services/solutions

AT&T has previously broken up at least a couple of times before, albeit it was a different AT&T but the argument is still valid: 1980's (baby bells), 1990's (NCR, Lucent,..), and 2000's: (Various segments). It is now overdue as history will repeat itself. Here's why it is needed this time:

1) The current set-up is simply not working, just look at the charts for the last 10 years to reach the same conclusion. If you restructure the spin-offs properly, they will flourish or at least fare far better than currently. This is precisely how Verizon is doing it and it is getting rave reviews. Does AT&T really need Satellite tv customers? Does it really need to keep servicing rural expensive to maintain areas? TV service has become mostly obsolete, TV is just an application like voice service became, and cord cutting is rampant. 5G will replace landline internet sooner or later. So what is really left: AT&T Wireless and the TimeWarner. The question becomes are they better off together or separate. I believe they are better off apart. In fact Verizon stayed away from buying a content company and that allowed it to manage its debt much better.

2) The dividend CANNOT (WILL NOT) be cut. That would be a disaster for the stock. Instead when you split up the company, a shareholder will own shares in all the new spinoffs effectively allowing AT&T to shuffle the dividend distribution (as well as debt distribution) without cutting the dividend. What you end up with is a far better and manageable scenario.

3) The bundling argument is old, this is when Verizon too thought it could do, but it did not help much. Currently Verizon has reversed that idea with what they are calling "Mix and Match". This allows to separate each segment should they decide to sell wireline voice and/or tv customers to Comcast, you will have a cleaner delineation in accounts and their actual value without the bundle complication.

Bigger is not always better. Sometimes less is more.

Careers and reputations built on years of serial acquisitions that have created a giant mess .
Given the egos that promised growth for decades , don't think it will happen

I agree, We could split them into separate companies then look into offers for purchase. I believe it hurts the brand having so many products under the same name. To take the OP idea one step further...

NUMBER 1: For any of this to work all call centers would have to become company-owned and operated. Not saying we do not have great partner support in some areas, but the lack of accountability would destroy this move and we would be back in the same boat as today.

2: Wireless - Rebranded as Cingular and ONLY DO WIRELESS! Yes, this could reduce jobs due to not needing as many stores and employees. This would also increase customer loyalty and give them predictable billing since combined  unified billing would just disappear.

3: DTV- Put both video products together since ATTTV is the Directv software with a UI update ( if you don't believe me look at the power cord for the ATTTV box aka the unreleased Wireless 4k Genie as well as the label under it. ). Give them competitive static pricing with no contract and if they need a dish installed just charge them for it. Customers would be willing to pay $100-$250 if you gave them a consistent price that would not change. This could end the switching back and forth.

4: ATT Wired Service: Give them a week off paid as they have been the ones beaten over the head for the longest and hardest. As a separate internet / VoIP company it would be free to become the powerhouse it once was. They would combine all of the technicians into cor with a state by state contract instead of the districts they have currently. The contract should be ratified yearly expire at 11:59 pm Dec 31st with the ratifications being voted on, signed, and completed 90 days prior. Now this company would have the speed it needs to address the issues on a local level. This new company would be more fiber focused and without having to worry about other companies or bundling other services. This company would be able to also acquire the smaller fiber companies that are eating away at the current model we have now. We are currently the bodybuilder who cannot scratch the middle of our back due to being so large.

  1. ) HBO Max  Time Warner - Let it run as a separate company with its massive streaming catalog. Without having to be bundled with a service it could become in the top 3 streaming platforms. It would be open to licensing deals from all of the players in the game with its humungous content catalog. With it being able to keep its profit for investment this could easily become a powerhouse that CBS and Peacock wouldn't be able to touch. This is before even thinking about character licensing for movies and\or video games.

no one wants to buy the losing business units of AT&T - Fire and jail Stankey and the other minions ruining the company - hire a completely new management team to come up with something creative.

Again, Jail Stankey - make sure Bubba is his cellmate.

While well thought out commentary I'm not sure how feasible.

My only problem with this is that these are all dying and/or troubled businesses. They either could not survive on their own or nobody wants them - at least not at any price that would significantly diminish AT&T's debt load.

VZ sold its rural landline properties to Frontier, which is now bankrupt because of that purchase. AT&T cannot offload their problems onto somebody else unless they are priced as annuities - which is what they are.

"I’m quite certain these scenarios have been presented by/to the board and are under consideration! "

I doubt it. Ratty, Stinky and the Board of Misdirectors are id–ts whose only objective are to line their pockets and boast their egos. Admitting they were wrong will not boost their egos.

Ratty needs to go!
Stinky needs to go!
Zucher needs to go!
and the Board of Misdirectors need to go!

Makes sense, sounds well thought out...I’m quite certain these scenarios have been presented by/to the board and are under consideration! Time is not on the side of ATT and they need to decide very soon. T can not hide under the Covid debacle forever! While they keep blaming the virus for all its problems, I think the employees know better and see right through this...someone needs to make some serious decisions for our future survival!
