Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Any other employees ranked highly considering leaving?

Are you or other highly ranked employees you know considering leaving? I've talked to several who no longer see the same opportunities that once existed and are actively looking to exit on their own timing and terms rather than wait, possibly for years, for the ongoing uncertainty, reduced/stagnant compensation, etc. to improve.

In my view, really smart people don't stay at EM... especially if you have a technical career. These days, EM produces many smart folks who are experts in the EM "system" but who are not actually of much use to other companies. I was actively discouraged from developing my technical capabilities and instead was pressured to "mentor" younger (KLTC) engineers to learn/develop all the technical skills. After 50, EM don't want their technical employee's to do any real technical work, which is a bit of a show stopper if you thrive on technical work! I chose to leave and now work for a company where I can develop my technical skills/knowledge and where I am rewarded for that. Wish I'd moved out 10 years earlier.

There are plenty of opportunities outside. Quite frankly, I don't work anywhere near what my degree is or job was for 5 years at XOM. Yes I use some of the same skills.

Smart people can learn new jobs, hard to see if you've been brainwashed by XOM. These people will get to companies who realize they are smart, actually value them, and let them actively choose their roles.

Amazing what happens when you empower people and let them find their passions/best fitting roles. So to anyone living in the XOM fed dogma of you can't get better out there, just apply and see!

To the person who asked where are people going to go... I haven't rested on my past successes. I continue to learn and develop my skills. If you've let your skills atrophy to the point you offer no value to another corporation I strongly suggest you do some self evaluation and get to work. I have no concerns with finding a new job. I have friends who were PIP'd who have already found jobs. Jobs are out there if you have the skills. If you don't have the skills, get them.

Yup... 5 year employee here, been ranked in top 20% every year I've worked here yet my TC is now lower than it was 4 years ago. Not really worried about being fired but I'm not expecting any career or salary progression in the near future, so looking to jump ship when the right opportunity comes along. I like my job/management and am still paid well with a good work life balance, so certainly not desperately applying everywhere, but maybe in the next year or two unless I see some improvement in my future career prognosis...

Where exactly are people going to go to? People at Exxon don't really do engineering. They just follow manuals.

PETE,RE,Geo are useless in other industries.

None of Comp sci folks at XOM are very good.

100% yes! We were just told that a new salary curve scheme is coming up. I’m ranked outstanding and suspect that I won’t see a raise in a long time.

Absolutely. Good people have good peers from school / prior work. Not hard to see the slow progression / poor prognosis at EM. Everyone is at
Least asking themselves the question. TBD if the timing is just too tough with covid.

Judging by the number of LinkedIn connection requests and updates to profiles I'm seeing, yes.

I know of several who are actively looking and suspect others who won't admit it area also testing the market.
