Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Ironically Cisco's best internal website and clearest documentation is the redundancy site

Most people who work in Cisco know internally it's a mess. Documents and pages always go missing (404). Our external documentation is also average at best with plenty of mistakes (spelling and technical) and also suffering plenty of broken links.

It's ironic that the best documentation and internal website is the redundancy page. If only we put that much effort into all our products and the things we do.

Good luck all. Unfortunately Cisco is fumbling the future. The old giant became IBM.

Every new VP comes with an idea to migrate all internal Cisco pages to a new tool/platform - so there we go, we get all 404 dead ends, impossible to find anything etc.

They contract everything out, including the creation of documentation. Often, a document's official "author" is a blue badge employee, but the material was actually written by a managed service – which is released after publishing. As policies change, the documents are never updated. This is one of the downsides of hiring other companies to run your company because you don't know what you're doing.

Wasn’t there a post here on decolonization efforts on our documentation (which is actually happening)? Amazing what this site deletes. But shock horror, yesterday there was a widely distributed plan to improve our documentation processes!!
I’m not holding my breath, but perhaps there’s hope when they admit there really is a problem.

Cisco is getting ready to split up. It is hard to see but does seem that they are going to do what Cabletron tried back in the 90’s.

Cisco is the next

Avaya
Nortel
Sun Microsystems
Lucent
Brocade
McData

In the end Cisco gave up not due to engineering but that the people at the top got disconnected. ELT does not care about technology they care about money. Cisco was at it best when technology and Sales meet eye to eye.

At this point Cisco is the “Animal Farm”

The faster Cisco can split the better. Sell collaboration, Security, hardware business and software (IOS).

IBM? Not quite. They reinvented themselves as a services company when they realized the mainframe market was dying, and PCs were going to become a commodity. Where has Cisco reinvented itself? Robbins gave a $17M blank check to Maria Martinez several years ago now, before she even started any sort of work. Fast forward to this present day: her organisation is the one taking most of the impact. She could have spun Cisco Services out as an independent systems integrator. She could have directed all technical staff to embrace public cloud technology and help customers migrate or extend to the cloud. Instead, she created thousands of redundant jobs overlapping with other roles in the company. Cisco isn’t on an IBM trajectory. It’s on the Nortel cruise ship.

IT has a problem with nepotism. Too many "leaders" hiring friends and family without any oversight.

The layout of their internal wiki pages are a disaster. I get a headache just looking at them.

WARNING: if you search for ‘redundancy' on CEC, you will get a call from that temp HR girl.
