Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why are you not as negative as ExxonMobil?

Former ExxonMobil employee here. I was a long tenured employee and used to have great pride in the company. But in the last few years the culture at XOM has changed dramatically for the worse. I was part of the wave laid-off during the summer (XOM lied and pretended it was a PIP program). The next wave for XOM layoffs is about to be announced any day now.

I have been checking the layoff boards for other O&G companies. I am struck by the fact that the board for Chevron (and Shell, BP boards ) seems to have much less activity and posts, especially compared to the ExxonMobil board. And the posts on this Chevron board are not nearly as negative towards Chevron, compared to the strongly negative comments made by XOM employees towards XOM.

My theory is that there is a lot more disgust at XOM at the way they have handled the situation. XOM lied to their employees and to the public. Their approach lacked integrity. The entire industry has suffered from the drop in demand, but XOM has handled the situation in a way that has completely destroyed employee morale and turned the work environment absolutely toxic.

What are your thoughts. Especially interested in comments from people that know something about both companies and their culture.

XOM is new to the layoff game. We have been eating our own for over five years now on this board. That's why yours is more active at present.

Racism and misogyny are rampant at XOM, even though they keep denying them because they have an inclusion and diversity initiative now. From what I’ve seen, it’s theatre to trick the gullible into thinking management cares.

Holy c-ap- if you find the CVX site even keeled, I’d be really curious what caliber of bigotry, misogyny, and vitriol is being trafficked on the XOM layoffs site! We’ve had to wade through the worst inner thoughts of our colleagues for months just to find a few rare insights into our never-ending transformation process.

Chevron is absolutely a class act from start to finish. I've never left a job involuntarily before, but even though CVX laid me off they told me as much as they could along the way so I understood their decision. Nothing I could complain about, excellent managers and truthful, motivated leadership all up and down.

Because Chevron notified us of layoffs pre COVID. So it’s been a long process that has been brewing. Chevron, despite what you see other people say, has treated us fairly well. Exxon tricks y’all into getting laid off by claiming performance, Chevron has been open about the possibilities of layoffs for almost a year and even gave us a chance to propose other cost saving opportunities. They also increased our severance pay. So despite what some cynical people may say chevron has done treated us better than other companies. Having been laid off from another company before it’s really a stark comparison.

I raised my hand the first day it opened because this reorg was harsher than i have been thru. 7th one in 13 years! Beg for current job back, try to steal your co workers, or meet with a rep you never met to have for 5 mins to tell them a you done. Harsh and torture. And 6 times, i did what Chevron needed because overall they treated me good. i worked hard too and developed self with projects above job because required. The EDT, remember.

When my job was not in new org, was basically told you need to meet with the 20 different people in a week with them needing to meet with 100 others. I am done with the games and being a # and having to explain how i was a great TL, co worker, friend to many. I have learned a ton and appreciate the great 13 years! But i deserve to be more than a # and i will test my waters elsewhere.

As far as culture, only O&G company i worked for but i think that is why not a ton of negatives. I admire our CEO alot for what i know about him. my mentor spoke extremely highly of him as well and they worked for him in a few roles. There are bad apples in mgmt and favorites but what job does not have that. corp america bs. Wishing well to all those staying. Hold on and expect for another torture event in 2 years because going a different direction.

The change curve, CVX started this 5 years ago and staff is used to it by now. This is all new to XOM folks.

XOM spent crazy amount buying into XTO and Permian deals. Also blew $200+ billion over the past 10 years in share buybacks and still got their stock price tanked by 70%.
Thank god our leaders aren't as blind as XOM's

Probably because XOM management made terrible decisions over the last 10 years and eroded the value of the company by well over 50%.

It is all negative, the big guys always lie, that is their job, their PMP is based on how good they can lie and keep everyone in dark. XOM was better at it, now all have come to a point that every lie is evident from day 1.

How the mighty has fallen ! XOM is an opaque culture with open brown nosing, cliques and nepotism. No one dares to ask any questions. You are told and never asked for an opinion. By contrast Chevron at least tries to value performance and promote conversation. May be it is not enough but no one is fired for asking questions.

It was good when oil just came out of ground and fetched lots of money. XOM's hubris and arrogance didn't matter. Unfortunately pumping more oil won't cut it anymore. If there is bad culture in the oil industry, XOM is a perfect example. Plus your stock is in the gutter. So why would you question the vitriol?

Exxon people have been drinking a lot of tiger-aide and it was good and strong and it’s what the plants crave. Well after all the plants died off and people realized that the tiger-aide and bad for them then revolted. There was a lot less of this push of company and brand loyalty in some of the other majors.

Or maybe it’s because we have been through so many of them we have become accustomed to them and Exxon says “we don’t lay-off we only get rid of the bad people and your not a bad person so don’t worry”. Well until they want to mysteriously make you into a bad person but then you will be gone in 3 months and no one will know why.
