Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

JDI winner and nominees shown the door :(

One JDI 2020 winner and 4 nominees were let go. Sad.

We hope Individual CFEs ,manager 360 feedback and employee survey is used to make this decisions.

@1baf - but it IS personal. In Consumer Creation they exited so many people, then shuffled everyone who was left, placing them into different roles, even offering some promotions. A select group of VPs made the final call on what personnel to keep - if you didn’t play the networking game right or hadn’t previously worked for one of these VPs you were out. It was predictable. Typical Nike.

Good talent does not matter in layoffs it’s much more politics and budgets don’t take it personal, and if you are kept don’t get full of yourself reach out to the ones let go show some support it could very easily be you next time

@1baf is correct. I lost my job at another footwear company due to my role being trimmed. Great reviews, awards and recognition earned, processes improved, dollars saved - the whole shebang. The owner had a panic at the beginning of the pandemic and cut a third of the workforce within three weeks of implementing WFH. I was lucky. I got a nice severance package. The remaining folks are suffering greatly while having to work multiple roles (covering the "eliminated" positions) while also being asked to make fiscal sacrifices, having their PTO balances frozen, paying more for insurance, etc.

VPs and Directors are simply told to make cuts in order to reach a financial number. I know this is harsh but, no matter how awesome or competent you are, you are merely a line on someone's budget spreadsheet. If your salary helps them get to their assigned number, you are cut.

@1baf+1:

In other companies, if a high performer's position is eliminated, they'll move that person to another position, maybe one of a low performer who was let go.

Why would a company layoff high performers and keep low performing employees? Doesn't make good business sense.

Just goes to show how inadequate HR is and the lack of planning that is being done.

“They eliminate roles, not people. So it doesn’t really matter what your CFE rating is or how loved you are. It’s a business decision. It’s not personal.”

This statement is beyond untrue. There are so many political hit jobs in this lay-off. And there are so many people that are worthless snakes that have avoided the cut.

Winning a Maxim 11 or JDI is the peak for many at Nike.

I once had a manager who requested 360 feedback to 10ish people and all the feedback came back glowing. I am a hard worker and work well with most people, except her for some reason. When she didn't get the results that she wanted she sent out another 360 request to another 10 people and found one person who I had an issue with once. She made that the centerpiece of my CFE and tried to give me a bad rating.

I refused to sign it and elevated the issue, fortunately I had built up a very good reputation for myself so the situation was adequately resolved. More often than not, the jerk who has an inferiority complex feels threatened by new/different ideas will make your life miserable even if you are an exceptional/high performing employee. At Nike it doesn't matter how hard you work, if someone in a key position is out to get you, especially in these times, you're done.

It really is a catch 22 there. You try to fly under the radar and you get called out. You try to make a difference and if one person feels threatened than you get called out...crazy place, for sure.

Do you have a bit more context?
Maybe they were offered other positions, but didn’t accept and decided to leave and take the severance package.
Sounds similar, but in reality it is not.

Doesn't this tell how illogical this whole process is? There is no clear criteria for letting people go. Sad, frustrating, and just wrong.
