Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What to be proud of?

The company I joined felt like a good and collaborative place to work. The company that dropped a PIPoff on so many undeserving, longtime employees is one I can’t see anyone being proud of. Nothing honorable or ethical about the Big E. Every one of our competitors treated their downsizing with a lot more openness and class than EM did

This is very true. People outside perhaps have a high opinion of Exxon, it’s still a big name, but I feel less and less proud to be a part of all this every day.

Be proud of what???
It is a shame (and Drama) when the company starts to rank employees who are just 1 to 3 years in the company as low performers. Are they trying to meet a minimum number of low performers ??? Don'ts knows? In 3 years you can barely learn how to perform your job. It is so bad for young university graduates in Singapore to be rated in PIP or PIL, when they come out on uni they mostly are in top of their schools, most have near perfect grades, 4+++; how can a young engineer go from top of the class to "PIL". There no one to guide and no one knows how to improve performance. HR is = Human remains

I am not sure outsiders have the great opinion people think of Exxonmobil. For a few years now I have been hesitant to tell anyone where I work. Vendors, cleaning crews etc. have stories about how cruel Exxonmobil employees can be to some of them. We have this history of thinking we can walk all over anyone and people are tired of it. This was tolerated from Exxon because they had money but now that they are less important I don’t think people continue to tolerate the bullying.

I gave my very best work to ExxonMobil for 20 years. The result was watching the game players and a$$ kissers get promoted to their level of incompetency. And that’s why EM is in the position it is. Too many Chiefs trying to boss around the too few Indians. Too many Chiefs “making work” in order to justify their plush position and pay. Meanwhile, the Indians were getting burned out and thus falling in the rankings as they approached early retirement age. Wonder why EM had all the “poor performers” sign a form agreeing not to sue? It’s because the vast majority of those “poor performers” were the older employees. EM could see the class action age discrimination lawsuit on the horizon. I still hope a high level hot shot attorney takes the bait and gather those “poor performers” together. I am ready!!

Don't know about always feeling good or proud, but be thankful if you survive the downsizings. You make a lot of money, have good benefits, and if you keep your priorities straight and don't try to find happiness at work, you can be both proud and thankful that you are working within the system to increase your wealth and provide for your family. Plus you give EM a good days work in exchange.

I detested the culture for years, but I made a boat load of money. Sometimes you work just to earn good money, and use it to be happy with other parts of your life. Very few find happiness, satisfaction and great money all in their job. That will be especially tough at EM.

Looking back, I do have some regrets that I stayed in a toxic culture for so long, but you have to make a choice as to what's most important.

If you decide to stay, quit bic*ing. Time to go to work. You can't carry a grudge against EM forever or you will never find joy or peace. Otherwise, go to greener pastures and see if it works out. It's your choice. Make it and move on.

Be proud of yourself and what you have achieved. Not the company as you are not running it. Darren should be asking that question.

Sorry, this is not new for ExxonMobil. The PIP has been a tool of ExxonMobil for years to drop the ranking with every year of age until you are at retirement age. The new part is ExxonMobil offering any many on top of walking you out the door. Therefore they are improving. Also, many other companies have not been kind with their cuts either!
