Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

An interesting post over on BP's board

Why are you not as negative as ExxonMobil?

XOM would rather pay dividends than severance. Remember poor DW is underpaid so every single dividend counts.

Because Exxon lies and threw their people under the bus. It was a very ugly and unethical concealed lay-off. Other companies were simply honest about it. Laying off employees is expected in this environment but publicly shaming your employees in the middle of an economic crisis and knowingly lying all in the name of your divide by makes them so much uglier.

No corporate is honest, because they only care about the shareholders, not their employees. The grass is always greener on the other side.

@sbq+17JwokeO Looks You are completely missing the point. If you read the posts on these O&G boards you will see a huge contrast in the way the companies handled the downturns. It’s not what they did, it’s how they did it.

You don’t give enough credit to the XOM employees. We are not stupid. We fully understand the economic situation and dynamics of our industry. We are not surprised by downsizing in this environment.

But other O&G company leaders were being honest and telling their employees they had to implement layoffs, and they regretted having to do it. Meanwhile Darren said (on May 27) we had no plans for layoffs, even though he had already by that time implemented the process to layoff 1600 employees through fake PIP.

Other O&G companies were honest with the public about having to layoff good people due to the reality of the downturn / covid-19. XOM said we had no lay-offs, but we were just were dumping the poor performers. They put the loser label on great people who didn’t deserve it.

Other O&G companies used severance programs which helped their employees transition out of the company. XOM dumped people who had worked for us for many years, even decades, on the street with 13 weeks of pay during the summer. And the severance program announced at the end of October is clearly substandard, compared to other O&G companies and compared to historical practice for our industry.

It’s condescending to say that our employees are just “not used to it”. And it’s plain wrong. Our employees are intelligent and they understand that sometimes companies in a cyclical industry need to reduce workforce. But we expect honesty and integrity. We expect our management to treat us like human beings who have dignity, and deserve recognition for the contributions we have made to the company over the years.

The message on this site is clear. It’s not what they did, it’s how they did it. And that makes a huge difference.

I have also seen that exact same post on the Chevron board. To me, the answer is obvious. These other companies have gone through layoffs before and have announced current layoffs earlier in the year. And they were more transparent. Exxon hasn’t had layoffs like this since 1986. Of course we aren’t used to it and are going to react negatively. If you go to a lot of the other boards and look at the posts when layoffs were being rumored and first announced, the reactions were just as negative. You can’t compare the comments of a group of people before layoff announcements to an organization that has known about layoffs for months. That’s not apples to apples. The original poster needs to either look at comments when layoffs were first announced at the other companies or wait a few months to see what the Exxon layoffs boards are saying at that point in time for a fair comparison.

Seems fairly obvious to me. It would be like comparing the comments of someone about to go through a divorce to someone that was divorced for a few months. The attitudes and content they produce are not going to be the same.

Because BP lays off all the time, their employees are used to it and know how to deal with it.

Great. Everyone else thinks we are already arragant and self centered.. Now we need to blast to the other forums how we are the best at this also?

I honestly don't think the BPs, Chevrons, etc who are looking at a layoff board (probably because of their situation) gives 2 sh–s about what is going on at Exxon. Especially the people who are making everything center around the themself.

I will engage. Cross talk is good and can help better understand the O&G culture. XOM is being managed by a group that only cares about the dividend and it shows. We will struggle over the next few years and those that see this are already starting to prepare to leave.

Soon you’ll have managers and supervisors supervising each other and patting themselves on the back for a job well done.

Time to get back to my PowerPoint!
