I see so many people complaining about their managers and that's one thing I can't relate to. Before anyone asks I’m in my mid-30s. My boss deserves respect for 1) The hard work I see him put in day in and day out 2) Showing me the ropes when I first started a few years ago 3) Being open minded to my daily input and 4) Surviving within the company for as long as he did. I’ve seen managers who are the worst and I am thankful. Give respect to the ones who lead by example because they are very few and far between.

Like everything else I've had good ones and bad ones. The truth is when you have a good supervisor or manager they can only help you so much. When you have a bad supervisor or manager there is no limit to the amount of damage they can do to your career, ranking, etc.
Good managers at ExxonMobil? You must be talking about the older ones?
Have you seen the new generation of pathetic management employees. Try working with some of these insecure talentless folks with poor undergrad degrees in India who licked their way to become lowly supervisors. You will know what s—ing up to management, working with someone with constant inferiority complex and fraud means.
In my 22 years with the company, I’ve had 8 managers. Out of 8, 3 were what I would regard as ‘salt of the earth‘ types. Smart, wise and industrious people as well empathetic, kind and fair. And what a pleasure it was to come to work during those times. The others were selfish, egotistical climbers who thought nothing of their staff. I hated coming to work each day under them. A good manager makes a HUGE difference.
A perfect example if someone exclusively using the “me” data point. I don’t doubt OP has a great manager. There are many of those across the company (as there should be). I think a big thing that upsets people is the (fewer, but still significant number of) managers that aren’t great for one reason or another (usually the kiss-up/kick-down types) that are continuing to be rewarded in their careers.
There are a lot of great managers. I’ve had some top notch supervisors, and some that were LTA. I’m truely thankful for the great ones I’ve had during my career.

True. OP you are an id–t to think that your manager is any good unless you are one of those managers who want to feel good by posting as someone else.
