Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I got another job offer and plan to get fired for low performance

I was told I was a high performer, then I got PIP'd. That was such a huge slap in the face.

Over the next 3 months I worked my a** off and checked off all the boxes, but reading this board made me anxious and certain I would be laid off no matter what, so I started looking for jobs.

Then I got an offer I liked. It's funny how being thrown a lifeline really changes your mental state. I started being more disillusioned with Exxon and hated what they put me through.

Then I was told I made it through PIP. Which I should be grateful for, except that this experience s—ed the life out of me and left me an empty shell. This process made me bitter and jaded. The lack of transparency, the fake values, seeing my good coworkers get crushed...

SInce my offer is remote (for the time being), I accepted it. I plan to work for them and just do the bare minimum for Exxon until they fire me for low performance. F— Exxon for what they put me(/us) through. I'll take the double salary and the severance.

1uny+17LpH87R You are right. The question I always get when people find out you work for Exxonmobil is “The gas station?”

If the story is true (doubt it), recognize that you are holding a position in the company while people are being laid off. You may feel that your perceived grievance with Exxon entitles you to steal a paycheck and potentially force one of your co-workers into redundancy (lay-offs)..... but you are really acting like an entitled and spoiled brat.

What if you openly criticize policy, CEO for his financial mismanagement and some of the managers or supervisors. That will get you into the right books and get you laid off.
They might suspect your plan though and decide to keep you for a little longer, give you a poor review and then PIP/ layoff next year so be careful.

Good for you OP. Don’t listen to everybody telling you to not do it. I switched industries and all people know about Exxon is the gas stations. Small world in O&G but it’s a larger world outside of it that someone with only a career at Exxon could imagine

Hell man, it's awesome, but the smart move would be to put in your two weeks and be gracious with the Exxon the rest of the way. So many risks involved trying to double dip like that, and this is a very small world. Even if you could recover from losing both jobs, and any financial setback of having their legal department come after you, your reputation will be pretty burned. People know people.

You've already stuck it to Exxon by quitting so long ago when you did (in your head) and still drawing that awesome paycheck. Don't push your luck with this one; you've gotten a chance we are all having wet dreams about.

@ygg+17LpH87R - are you talking about the performance system that has rewarded a bunch of id–ts who have destroyed shareholder wealth over the past 10 years, got the company kicked out of Dow Jones and have no integrity?
Ranking system at XOM has zero credibility. Just because the system worked for you doesn’t mean you are better than NSI folks. You just have a brown nose and don’t mind kissing a–. Enjoy that foul odor!

I've had a second job with Greenpeace for the last 12 years.
Pay is less, no bennies, off the books.
Sleep like a baby though.

Amazing how many people lie to themselves. Only the BOTTOM 8% were NSI and were offered a PIP. Putting it another way, it was determined by a consensus of supervisors and managers that 92% of the people in your assessment group were better than you. Get over yourself.

Do it for a month and then drop XOM. Have note respect for your new employer.

I was PIP’d and it is understandable that people are angry but I would not want to hurt my friends that are still there. I’m sure the morale is low and stress levels are high enough.

That's the sort of thing that will get you fired with 0 severance. It also makes you lower than pond scum because you know the rules and are willfully violating them.

Good job. I think that is the great way to stick it to XOM.

I think there's a moonlighting policy, and if you have any conflict of interest (like at all) they (and knowing XOM, will) go after you

Don't get caught with your pants down with your new company. I had a friend that tried it and got caught and was fired by both companies. In fact he was at the new company when a current co-worker from his other company came to the new office and told his old company what he was up to. He got fired at both places.

Good luck to you, but I agree with others that it is a risky game, working for 2 full-time employers like that.

I would actually recommend that you have fun with EM, by voicing your honest opinions at every “public” opportunity (group, section, department meetings, or even better - a forum !)

You are in a position that many of us would love to be in. You can offend managers with your honest, open up the minds of co-workers and when you’ve finally pushed things far enough, you can tell your boss .... or VP .... where to stick their job !

Look at the employee manual for your new job. You might be playing with fire there. Good luck with everything. At least maybe you can sign up for the involuntary layoff somehow
