IBM CEO Arvind Krishna wants to completely transform his organization

Today in an interview with Jon Fortt at the CNBC Evolve summit, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna made it
clear that his whole focus is going to be on transforming his organization into a hybrid cloud
management vendor moving forward.

That means that instead of trying to primarily sell its own infrastructure or software services —
although it will continue to do that — it will concentrate on leveraging Red Hat, the company it
bought for $34 billion in 2018, to help customers manage their hybrid environments regardless
of location.

If you aren't tied to hybrid cloud management and Red Hat in some way, kiss your butt goodbye.

I d k how many years you have spent at ibm but outside people dont care that much in developer world if you have 1 object oriented language and python on your resume. Pick up a cloud certification of your choice from aws, azure or gcp then it's all about interviewing. don't think your skills are irrelevant, just need to have an idea about modern lingo (cloud certi should do it)

If you're ibm manager otoh, industry should definitely look down on those because managers are useless and lazy at ibm

Is Arvind completely insane, delusional, clueless, or a mixture of all 3? Buy Red Hat to become Red Hat and dump the rest. What kind of an id–tic strategy is that?

"Get out now. Life is so much better outside that toxic environment. "

And go where?

  • Many of us have our lives tied up in IBM-centric technology, that other major players may not use
  • Many other major players try not to hire ex-IBM'ers
  • Many other places don't give folks that worked on IBM tech, credit for being able to adapt to other languages and platforms...

Unfortunately the industry has a way of pidgeon holing people based on prior experience and changing direction mid or late career is a real problem.

To transform IBM IBM must go outside of IBM to get a CEO otherwise it's the same movie with a different cast

@1ptz+17RHU8QI It's more than just "capitulating on public cloud" it's running all the existing legacy c-ap on prem in OpenShift containers and calling it "hybrid cloud". Like when they decided to call all the old legacy software "Cognitive" and slapped the Watson label on everything. This isn't a strategy and isn't "transformative" it's BS.

We used to ask "How long will it take IBM to blue-wash Red Hat?" Now we need to ask "How long will it take Red Hat to red-wash IBM?"

Microsoft and Amazon must be laughing at this. Krishna might think IBM can be their partners, but why would either of them slow down to let IBM catch up?

“I look at both Microsoft and Amazon as likely partners in this journey, not as being the one and two [in market share]. In the hybrid world the question is where does the client want to decide where the workload runs? They could run it on Amazon. They can run on Microsoft. They can run it on IBM or they can run it on premises,” he said.

This IBM's capitulation in the Public Cloud... not that we knew it already, but it clearly shows that IBM DOES NOT KNOW how to compete in anything, and therefore IBM will soon be just a Mainframe company because there they don't have any competition!!

"having extreme focus" = if you are not on the bandwagon, you are redundant.

what does this mean for the future of Power ? After Power9 , they are out of Open Power, HPC, AI and Cloud. The refocus is on existing enterprise companies. The top technical lead of Power is not at AMD along with a long list of other key personnel.
