Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Why are we being made to suffer?

Layoffs are ongoing over the next few weeks and we have no idea who will be impacted, how many, what departments or how it has been determined. All of these issues combined will only cause more anxiety, stress and DEFINITELY fear. Leave it to TR to treat their employees so callously. I can pretty much guess that productivity will take a dip as we all worry about our future.

Quality will definitely suffer but I don’t think that management really cares. They’re strictly a bottom line company and as people here have said time and time again rather than cutting the deadwood at the top with their large six figure salaries who do nothing but push pencils and send out id–tic emails, they would rather cut hard-working employees who only make a fraction of what they do.

This has been such a lousy year that nothing that they do will shock me.

Don't use the pandemic as a crutch. Stretch yourselves and apply for any open positions that fit your experience and interest and apply for them. Companies are still hiring, especially for the niche areas that TR has a history of specializing in.

Make them feel the pain. Anyone who is intelligent and has marketable skills would be making the prudent choice in jumping ship to a competitor or another company if it fits with our overall life position and goals.

And remember to leave as gracefully and professionally as possible. TR has realized the value of some only after some left and made them feel the pain. TR has to bring some people back into the fold and make them feel the pain.

But remember they gave us a mental health day. TR is just fake, along with senior management who talk about the importance of people, then stab many of them in the back. Even the ones that are safe, really aren't, they just weren't chosen this time. They truly don't care about people at all, it is all about survival for themselves. If it is not about performance, then why care about performing, show up, do your job and leave, not a stitch more. Extra effort or superior performance doesn't mean anything.

To do it over a day requires a top notch and co-ordinated management. Do you think that exists here?

Why over the next few weeks, why not just do it one day instead of dragging it out?

Unfortunately this is an annual event and TR should be transparent about this during the interview and onboarding process. They continually say its non performance related, if that is the case they should let everyone know, it doesn't matter how well you do, if your number is called, you will be gone. The team leaders/managers can and do impact this, but they will sell their souls to keep their jobs, that is why senior leadership typically doesn't get bounced, they do the dirty work. After the dust settles, look around in bewilderment who is left, mind boggling how some are still employed after years of failure but performers are let go since its not performance related. So why perform?

Good luck! Try to remember that even if you are lucky enough to be safe this year, many will not be. They will have to keep coming in so that they can get a paycheck for as long as they can and severance. When I was laid off, not only was the management and HR uncaring & atrocious, my soon to be former co workers were terrible too.
