Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Situation in IBM Italy

Dear friends,
we just all received a VOLUNTARY offer to leave the company which expires in 4 weeks.
The reason for this voluntary basis is that by virtue of a national decree ALL mass layoffs are frozen until March 21st 2021 due to the COVID situation.
Management implies that you better jump on this offer now since on the 22nd of March we will be hit by a huge number of forceful layoffs. Rumors have that in the 800-1000 ballpark on a total workforce of around 5000.
There's a stark unfavorable treatment of over 60s which might seem an old ripe age but in our country you cannot receive your pension before 67-68 (public system here) which leaves a huge gap to sustain your family for 96 months.
If I had faith I'd pray, if I'd be less familiar with statistics I'd play the lottery, being a pathetic agnostic rationalist I can only suffer and worry favoring chronic diseases.
Good luck to all of us.

IBM Italy is going to die by 4 years, at least. Few private customers, a lot of public administration contracts lost. I leaved IBM 2 years Ago and now I'm working as free consultant and I'm happy. IBM It's the worst company where you can work.

They are offering a somewhat progressive amount of months which ramp up steeply for people 50-55 (35 months) and then 56-59 (38 months) to then drop dramatically for 60+ (20 months).
These numbers are meaningless if you don't compare them to the labor market, cost of life and pensioning system which is not achievable before you are around 68 years old. Also these are voluntary adhesions. When you are laid off by the company you will have some benefits by law which are not equivalent (very approx) to 24 months or so.
Rationally I personally believe that hanging is the least terrible option right now, even though emotionally if there was some glimmer of re-employment I'd leave only slightly slower than light.

Might be a good time to start praying! God welcomes back any fool that has wandered!

Could you please give a little more details on the voluntary leave offer? How many months of salary are they offering?

Hang in there. Anything can change between now and March 2021 and it's still a few months away. Economy may look better then. Of course it doesn't hurt to look around too.
