Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Most IBM employees are just waiting for the next Resource Action (layoff)

Is it just me or are most IBM employees just dogging it until they get laid off?
I know I am.

IBM canned me several years ago and it was a good thing. Now I get actual raises. The constant threat of a layoff is gone. Get out while you have a job. For any IBM employee, the question is not 'if' you're going to get laid off the questions is 'when' you're going to get laid off.

@3hqd do you really think brand names matter for anything anymore in tech? Reality check: this isn’t the 1980s. Nobody cares who you work for. You have to go through the same grueling interview process as everyone else. Stop using your company name as an excuse and prepare better for interviews. Jobs aren’t going to be handed to you.

Source: I went through external interviews and recently left for a FAANG. My coworkers come from all different past employers, some even from no tech background at all, but we all had to go through the same interview process that was a great leveler.

If you haven't noticed yet, IBM is slowing moving away from talking about Hybrid... the new buzzword is Automation... IBM is the new Automation in everything going forward...

After reading the link from @2wln+17Xeaw23
This whole "Hybrid" BS sounds like a pipe dream. It sounds more like IBM knows that it is so far behind Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba, Tencent, heck probably Walmart, and pretty much all cloud companies on this planet, that "Hybrid" is IBM's only play. Hybrid or "Partnership" sounds like a plea from IBM to let all the other cloud bullies to let them play in the same sandbox, even though IBM doesn't belong.
Why would a company or customer pay tons of money to another company for cloud, and then spend even more tons of money to have IBM support it? It all sounds like wishful thinking.

IBM wants to get it’s bad news behind it ASAP. They do not care that it’s the holidays as Covid has given them an excuse to restructure in a much bigger way than they previously believed. The new CEO knows the death by a thousand cuts is k–ling IBM and has prioritized the timeline as job 1. The 2.3 billion restructuring charge will be spent in 4th q and will be spread around the world. This pretty much is streamlining IBM into more efficient pieces. The spin-offs of the efficient pieces will happen over the first half of 2021. It’s more than just GTS. The restructuring is prioritizing how IBM goes to market and it is focusing on enterprise. The bain study from 2018 focused on fortune 1000 accounts revenue/profit vs revenue/profit from everything else IBM did. The result of that study said IBM could achieve 80-85% of their revenue/profit objectives if they just focused on fortune 1000 accounts and could downsize everything else considerably. AK and the CFO have made it quite clear during the 2nd q and 3rd q earnings calls that its all about enterprise. If you are not associated with the fortune 1000-1200 accounts worldwide and their go to market support strategy (Cloud/RedHat/AI) IBM most likely will spin you off. NOT because you are not profitable, but because you are not profitable enough vs the SG&A cost of keeping you. Folks don’t want to hear that, but the play was called by AK when he became CEO and it’s now being ruthlessly pursued. Don’t forget IBM has a get out of jail free excuse card this year “Covid” They will exploit that as hard as they can in 2020 to move the restructuring along. Good luck to all as this is going to be painful until IBM emerges on the other side in 3rd q of 2021

Your days are numbered folks. Especially in GTS. The GTS Exec leadership is a joke which is why your job and the division is toast.

Huge news from UKI - voluntary layoffs get 6 months salary plus leaving notice period paid out. This is a huge departure from the statutory minimum that was offered up until now. Shows that IBM is desperate to shed as much headcount as possible regardless of the cost.

If they let folks go, how many days do they have from being notified to pack up and leave? Assuming they can’t find anything internally..

1zwr I believe you are mistaken concerning the IBM 401K match. I believe everyone who is an active employee on Dec 15th gets the match. If true, we are within the 30 day PIP and layoff window, so 401k becomes a non-issue

Is there anything left to do in iBM. On other side, if this rumours about Dominion voting turn out to be true what repercussions it will have on cloud business? Somehow I do believe that whole trust into cloud business will be severely undermined however US elections turn out to be.

Power layoff in March, we have had one every year for the last five years in the spring and we are expecting a ajar one with the way power is getting run into the ground. Power revenue is way down and losing money

Ha. You’re utterly clueless. They’d rather lay you off days before year end so they don’t have to pay your 401k match. They did it in 2019, in 2018 and every year for the last 5 years (at least). I’ve seen people on PIPs, RIFs and “executive action” in Q4 with “hiring freezes” implemented throughout Q4. It helps bolster numbers for the fiscal year. Wake up and smell the roses pal...

Between all of us, I'd rather they just get it over with, or at least tell us what's going on.

But that's wishful thinking, I suppose.

Not dogging it, but definitely expecting RA's.

What's unclear is whether we should expect a major action this "RA Thursday" (11-19-2020), or if it will be low key until into next year when the NewCo spinoff plans and actions become clearer.

Some are expecting immediate action... others figure it will take some time to sort out and expect 2021 to be when things happen.
