Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Don’t Be Afraid

I was part of the June layoff and landed a better role, at a better company, for better $$ in just over a month. I came here today because a former colleague informed of the blood bath last week.

If you are impacted, here is the plan I followed:

  1. Take one day to “lick your wounds”. Everyone is allowed to grieve.
  2. Treat your job search like it’s your job, set hours and stick to them
  3. Work your LinkedIn connections! I cannot stress this enough. Work your 1st AND 2nd connections
  4. Put your resume through free resume evaluation tools
  5. Use Indeed.com if you are not a techy
  6. Make a list of all of Optum competitors, review their career pages, determine if anyone in your network works there so you can ask for an introduction

ABOVE ALL, DON’T BUY INTO THE BS THAT YOU ARE ON A PROTECTED LIST, even if a UHG recruiter calls you and tells you that.

Be kind to yourself. Panic is your worst enemy and will tank you in an interview. Be kind to your family and don’t show fear - show confidence.

There was a reason you were employed at UHG, and that’s because you are strong, smart and capable. Those skills are needed elsewhere and you’ll land on your feet!

Well Said, I was notified December 4th, 2019 in a goup meeting with 7 other managers, all mnuted that our positions were being eleiminated. I was able to find another job a few days later with a Jan start date. It is a better job, less stress and better benfits. NO High deductable plan. I was able to enjoy my holidays stress free. Ther is life after Optum.

I agree with a lot of this. But if you have been working long hours under stressful conditions, you might need more than a day to recover after your last day at Optum. If you can afford it, take a week at least. Do any medical/dental needs before your coverage runs out (if possible) and take some time to figure out what you want to do next. Once you are a little bit rested, you'll be better able to focus on your resume and job search.

I rushed into my job search and everything I did at the beginning was kind of a waste of time because I was still exhausted, stressed out and all over the place mentally.
