Stores are hiring for the same or similar positions like the ones that laid off employees had. If you want to work there again you have to go through the hiring process. If you get hired again and were laid off 90 days or less before the new start date you maintain your original hire date - if your start date is over 90 days from your laid off date then you are a new hire.

Aren't Macys supposed to contact everyone back on the laid off list first before bringing in new help? I got laid off for the first time back in 2018 in the SF store when they were moving everything from the now deserted Mens building to the women's side then got called back a month and a half later for a position in the women's building. I understand this time it's different due to the pandemic but some of my friends who worked there for 6 or 7 years already got called back while I still don't know my fate.

No, the 90 days policy is just that .. 90 days. If they made extensions to bridge yours at 101 days, what’s the point of the policy? Where’s the cut-off? Do they go back and extend everyone’s, or only those brazen enough to ask? If you were not rehired within 90 days; you are a new employee. End of story.
Has anyone been hired back longer than 90 days after their layoff date and been able to keep their original hire date? I worked there for 20 years and they asked me to come back october 11th. This is eleven days beyond the 90 days of the layoff date. Do you think I will be able to keep my original hire date. I don’t know who to ask in HR.
I was rehired at day 82. & nothjng had to be repaid cuz I had 4 wks severance pay, so I only had to be apart from M for 4 weeks in order to keep it.
They may be hired back before the 90 days, they will have to pay a prorated portion of the severance back though. So have them be mindful of this.
You think Macy's is bad. You should go to the Barnes & Noble page. The mangement there is vicious.
If you were layed off and took package, you cannot be hired back until after 90 days. Thats what u agreed to when u sign.
You will be new colleague and its only Seasonal at this point. Will be hired at minimum your store pays
So the laid off employees aren’t good enough to even be asked if they are interested in coming back. They don’t call contact the laid off employees - they post the jobs for anyone to apply. I agree with the person who posted that there are administrative costs associated with all this. Furlough, layoff, post jobs, interview, hire, train, etc. Some laid off employees would come back and that would be easier.
Have you been to the store ? It’s chaos ! Why would you want to be hired back to that dying mess or be worked to death in a unsafe environment
Brilliant. Keep employees on furlough, incurring that cost. Then lay them off permanently. Then rehire them, incurring the administrative expense of that. 58
