Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Get ready S Bands... next week cometh

Word on the street is that next week the next layer will meet the God of Severance. Sure you can say "Not today" today. However next week there will be a flurry (200+ is what I've been told) of two bill+ a year S bands brushing up on their LinkedIn profile. Expect a ton of friend requests from them.

Sure all of the E and U bands will temporarily be happy that their PPT makin', status report fakin', credit for their work takin' boss will no longer be breathing down their neck, but it will be short lived. It's a trickle down people, the lower job levels will get hit harder just a few weeks later.

@Old Timer, how do I know if the same program has been installed in mine?

Wishing you well, and that somehow you're wrong

@2unw

Did you ever stop and wonder why there are so many "useful id–ts" at Nike?

@2unw+: unfortunately, it's a club. During the last layoff, there was an S band that was exactly the same. No direct reports, didn't do anything that anyone could identify, was in the office maybe a couple days a weeks for four or five hours/day and didn't get laid off. People were shocked.

Other S bands who had very large teams actually called him out but for some reason he was kept on, and actually moved to his "dream" job and then fired about eight months later.

There are a lot of those lazy, do nothings around Nike. They know how to talk a good game.

@old timer I’m praying for you and hope your gut response is wrong.

@oldtimer your instinct is probably correct. Recommend moving your personal files now. Nothing Nike related that could get you in trouble but you don’t want to have to deal with retrieving your personal files after the fact. If you have a meeting on the calendar next week with your boss or an unplanned zoom shows up, you will know.

@2unw, S band makes way more than 200k, let's put 300k+ conservatively. One of the easy way to trim fat is to merge teams, why would we need a senior director with less than 5 people in the entire team? Why do we have many directors who has no direct report and do no work like an individual contributor? It's obvious there, we see it, sure HR see it too. Now, let's wait, but I doubt any real change would happen...

@3unq, hang in there and know that despite how disheartening things may look now, you will be better off in the future. Yes, DO NOT transfer any files or engage in other "suspicious" activities. They will use it against you in anyway they can.

I'm 100% certain a program was added to my computer on Tuesday 10/29 to track my transfer of documents or information. I'm an S band. I know I'm gone. It is happening next week. 10/5-20

@2unw, completely agree with the notions you have highlighted in terms of how HR can get involved in identifying and letting go of the right people. It is too logical though for HR or Nike's leadership in general. We all know that it is pretty much club members protecting each other.

Personally, I am way too tired and disheartened by the whole approach and the lack of respect and empathy that have been on display lately for the employees. Seriously, lay me off or don't...makes no difference. One things I know to be true and is the moment I secure a position else where (outside of Nike) then I will go. Not speaking for others; only my personal opinion - I have no reason to still want to be part of the organization.

“Word on the street...”

So far most of the “layoffs are starting this week!” rumors posted to this site have proven inaccurate.

I’ll believe it when it actually happens.

And BTW I truly hope Nike is being thoughtful with these layoffs and letting go of the correct people. I happen to know of an S-band who is grossly incompetent and literally does almost nothing. And no, I’m not at all exaggerating when I say this person does almost nothing. In my work function it’s an open secret that he adds no value, and everyone in my function is gobsmacked that this dude pulls down $200K+/year to do...nothing.

We all fear HE will keep his job while someone who actually earns their paycheck will be let go. Needless to say these kind of poor lay-off selections are destructive to morale when they happen. That’s why Nike needs to ensure when it lets people go it is selecting the right people.

It’s also not difficult to identify who “the right people” are. HR just needs to survey each employee group. I think on most teams you’d find a consensus as to who on the team adds value and who doesn’t. From there HR’s job becomes much easier.

This is how it was done at my last company. When layoffs came each employee had an anonymous opportunity to individually rate their fellow team members. While not a perfect system it was pretty darn effective at informing HR who needed to stay and who needed to go. It also provided legal cover to HR because when they let someone go HR could then honestly say “This person was laid off because a consensus of their peers and co-workers identified this person as a weak player on their team.”

I wish Nike would do something similar since it results in a better, more fair outcome that doesn’t destroy morale.

OK! Where di you hear this stuff and do your believe it? Not saying it is not true, just curious. Anyway, we had yet another All Hand Technology meeting today and they could not tell us a fuing this that is useful. So sick of the fuing company and its lack of respect for its employees.

Ahhh...don't be fooled. Several more paychecks? The VPs were paid through Oct 1. You had to work. They got to go to the beach and were still "employed". :)
