Living alone, owning a home (mortgage), car payment, running a house/ paying for issues like plumbing, flooding, food, insurance, additional living expenses. Medical bills and pr-scrip-ions and school loans... just had to pay over 3000.00 to have trees cut down in my back yard that were over grown... I pay for all on one salary. Sometimes I wonder why single people are called out for being better off financially.
You are mistaken and ignorant in your thought process and the fact you would post this makes me more angry than facing a lay-off in the first place.
But, since I could blow of some steam- let me just lay it out for you-

As a single, I do not and will not qualify for any financial assistance in the event of a lay-off- in fact, I was just glancing through my mail and came across an electric statement. I opened it to pay ($200 for the month because I have a home built in the 1910’s and though beautiful, it’s a bear to pay utilities) I noticed the “Need Help? See if You Qualify for Assistance”. So I figured I would look at it- I laughed out loud. Hideous laugh. As a single person working full time- I could only receive assistance (special payment plan) if I made less than 16,400 a year. I made that working part time in college. It’s a joke. BUT for a family of 3 it went up to 35,000 and then an additional 5,000 per child! And knowing plenty of families who one spouse stays at home, that would almost guarantee help for you if you are laid off.

I also will not be able to get temporary assistance in the form of food stamps or other government programs. Again, even though I live pay check to pay check being single and owning a home and making ends meet- because I didn’t have a child and make more than 20,000/yr I have to starve too. But I have friends who are able to buy loads of food with two working spouses because they STILL qualify for stamps.

Insurance. Singles won’t get Medicaid ina situation where income is nothing. Families can qualify for Medicaid when they have children. Even if it’s just discounted- it’s not Cobra.

Families may still have one working spouse in the event of you getting laid off. You cut down on expenses and budget and find a new job. Oh, and childcare is free because you aren’t working. Me, last time I checked- bills keep coming in, I made too much in 2019 and I can’t make my dog go find a job- sooooo I guess I’ll just do what I have to and go work at McDonald’s and make it work.
There are so many resources for families. In most states. And for good reason, no child should EVER be in need of food or clothing or anything. I believe in helping families that are in temporary financial crisis.
That being said, to say singles shouldn’t be worried is an uneducated assumption. I worry every day- every single day. I make cuts where I can, gave up little things I find joy in buying for now, and I keep my resume updated. I chose to buy my own home to hopefully one day have a family in. But, in order for me to live in a neighborhood full of cute little families- it takes 90 percent of my income and I budget every. Single. Cent. So, think twice before assuming we singles have it easy.
