Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Downstream S---ers

I never understood why downstream engineers put up with making less than upstream for doing same work. I wouldn’t. Why do you? Why not leave?

Being paid higher than industry is small consolation knowing the person next to you is making more just because they hired into US and you hired into DS. Whatever makes you feel better. I wouldn’t put up with it though.

In most non-US countries, EM DS engineers are paid higher than industry. In addition, chemical engineering doesn't have a ton of direct applicability outside of O&G.

If you stuck with O&G, you would be at another major or a national oil company, which don't pay as well. If you wanted something as lucrative like IB or consulting, you would be competing with a much wider pool of applicants who are more well versed in those fields.

Being on a lower pay scale in itself does not make it a reason to leave.

TS obviously is not an engineer or is just plain trying to stir sh–.

Not so... even when DS are supporting US they stay on the DS pay scale. So DS sitting in cube next to US doing same job but paid less.

U/S gets paid more because they make more money than other businesses. It’s as simple as that. But now that they are not making it, maybe it’s time to recaliberate.

Why do you think we make less? I’ve heard the opposite, even HR confirmed

They could quit and go work somewhere else where they aren’t treated like second class citizens

It's not like downstreamers have a choice to go to upstream. I'm sure they have been frustrated. What could they do?

The forum has been on fire tonight. Melting this company to the ground in one night. Not even D Woods could pull that off.
