Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

An outsider view

Complete outsider looking in and from previous layoffs at other employers, you are 99.9% safe in my opinion.

I was the top performer on my team back in the 2009-2010 layoffs at a former employer. Managers had to schedule 1:1 meetings with all team members. All were 15 minutes. We had 13 people in our department. I was #8.

Because so much bad was happening then, you had no clue. #1 - #7 were all laid off. I was in her office literally shaking. She asked what was wrong and I told her what I was expecting to happen. She laughed and said no. She said she set the meeting schedule the way she did so the people not affected would know.

It wasn't bragging about being the top person on the team, but it was known. She said she expected the team remaining to recognize it as well so everyone would be at ease. I took the rest of the day off and went home because the mental stress was exhausting. Spent the day with my then 2yo and everything went to ease from there.

Believe me, it s—s. It is the reason I never went into management. I could never sit so emotionless and tell someone I am impacting their family.

Not saying it’s still true, but when I got hit, I got the spreadsheet showing the LRd workers age. It went something like 52-54-66-58-24-50, they laid off a few young people to keep the overall age average down. Not sure if they still do that now though. Good luck to everybody, even those that are still there.

My SA is the youngest and cheapest on the team and was the only one out of the team of 10 let go today. So, yeah, so much for that.

  1. Worthless humblebrag 2. At Cisco, you could be the highest ranked employee in your group and get laid off. It’s all about age and wage. In fact, merit raises can put you in that layoff sweet spot, because you’re on the spreadsheet as making too much.

As one was was LRd in 2015, let me tell you that it gets better. My current job pays more and the company is much better. Hang in there!

I am trying hard to understand "What is the outside view ?" Have empathy - irrespective of performance people are losing jobs , it is not about you.
