Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Sooo... Is Exxon a cult?

The EM culture has an alarming number of features typical of cults. Take a look at the BITE model. Thoughts? https://freedomofmind.com/bite-model/

We had the Dennison culture survey last year, but the results were so bad that some departments chose not to discuss them with the organization. Doing a survey and then not sharing the results because they are bad in not a “best practice “. Maybe that was a “sign post” of where we were headed. And here we are, with all the MBA buzz words and no cash.

Not really... people are free to leave at any moment and do frequently. There's no backlash unless your foolish about how you approach your departure. Almost none of the criteria in the article match ExxonMobil in my opinion. The company is a for profit enterprise with a very strong culture (although it could use some changes as even the company has admitted but just hasn't been able to implement).

Is OP trying to frame this as a “new discovery?”

There are a ton of things that are cultish. There are 100 different groups to be involved with, all which you are free to do in your daily routine, as long as you are willing to subject yourself to working at night on your own time to complete your job responsibilities. I am involved way more meetings and calls after hours than I should be, and because others are doing it, it’s looked down on for not being willing.

This happens in the US at least once a year when United Way pledging and raffle tickets come around, as well as the service projects. I can’t tell you how many of those I have participated in on weekends because I felt pressured by supervisors who were leading the projects, because they got forced in.
