Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What's happening in Chevron/Oronite in Richmond?

I received a job offer before the pandemic hit for a position in Oronite in Richmond, but the company has delayed my start date repeatedly first because of the pandemic and then because of a reorganization. I have no idea what that means, but I would like some idea of it if anyone is familiar. Also, should I just jump ship since it seems they won't honor the job offer?

OP, I believe I am familiar with your situation. Due to the re-org, the position you applied for and received a job offer for might not exist in the new organisation. And it is out of the hiring manager's hand. Nonetheless, as others have commented, reach out to them just to get a confirmation one way or another

I assume since you mention Richmond that the job offer is on the technical side of Oronite at the Richmond Technology Center. I worked there, for over 40 years, in what became ETC over the decades (retired 5 years ago as part of Alpha). At times I was involved with hiring both campus and experienced hires. These are definitely extraordinary times ... but in ETC we ALWAYS honored a job offer and were generally told to never reduce our campus hiring to zero during downturns since that causes problems in the future with demographics. Experienced hiring could be frozen unless the specialization was in desperate demand. Again, assuming you are technical....I also assume that you made a site visit to Richmond ... so I would forget contacting Human Resources and try to get in contact with anyone you interviewed with to get a better idea of what is going on. The RTC campus, because it is in Contra Costa county , is driven by their COVID restrictions ... so the campus has been essentially shut down with most work getting done remotely. This has put a big damper on any lab work! And yes ... the whole Corp (including Oronite) has been caught up in Functional Transformation (ie REORG). The new Oronite tech mgrs and higher placed technical people should be in place. Hopefully some of the same folks you interviewed with still have positions and can tell you more. I am not surprised with the delay. If you really liked the position you accepted, I would stick with it.

Chevron is a total dysfunctional mess. I know first hand as I was there for 40 years and got out during the accelerated EOI (Expression of Interest) - to be payed off. For the last 15 years the company has been restructuring with layoffs every 12 to 18 months. The reorgs, we were told, were an attempt to reduce cost and improve processes but this never happened. This company doesn’t learn from their mistakes. They just keep repeating them. It’s will always be a good old white boys club with unqualified management in the positions that really could effect change. My advice to you and all is move on and get out now before you get trapped in the dysfunctional culture. I wish I had long ago but very happy to be out of there now.

I’ve seen these things happen before, mainly with college graduate hires. Your case will probably result the same. When the company extends an offer to hire someone and something extraordinary happens, like the pandemic or a major reorganization before completing the on boarding, the company will go as far as compensating the individual with a check for one year of salary. I would advise you to stay put and wait. You will ultimately be hired by Chevron or receive adequate compensation if you’re not hired.

You’re f*cked. No one is going to even know who you are after the re-org, and the people that extended the offer probably already got laid off.

It’s a sh!t show right now.

If you have something else going on, I would jump ship. If not, just wait and see what happens and continue looking for something else
